Advantages: A fantastic chocolate treat which is wonderfully packaged
Disadvantages: Not for haters of hazelnut
Throughout each year I must eat more than my bodyweight in Ferrero Rocher. For me, they are the ultimate in chocolate treats and I will happily sit there and devour a large box of them if given the slightest opportunity. After the New Year I went down to my local Sainsbury's store and to my delight found that a fantastic post-Christmas offer was on meaning that instead of retailing at £5.49 as they had been before Christmas and up until the New Year in fact, boxes of 30 Ferrero Rocher were now costing just £1.37. Sainsbury's often have fantastic offers around key times of the year such as Christmas and Easter, with reductions extending to 75%; I was so thankful that this year was no different and that my local store had a healthy supply of my favourite Ferrero face fillers. Having taken full advantage of the offer and bought multiple boxes of Ferrero Rocher, I felt the need to share my joy with others and as such am writing this today.
Ferrero is an Italian chocolate manufacturer which was founded in 1946 and offers a large range of products such as Nutella, Tic Tacs, the entire Kinder range, and of course Ferrero Rocher. The Ferrero Rocher chocolates are currently sold in over 100 countries worldwide, and according to their website Ferrero is also the largest single purchaser of hazelnuts in the world and buys approximately 25% of the annual global supply. Each chocolate is individually wrapped in gold, clocking in at 73 and 1/3 calories per 12.5g piece.
The way in which the Ferrero Rocher are boxed I feel is a key selling point of the product. A clear plastic box contains the gold wrapped joy bundles meaning that all the chocolates contained are on full display before you have even opened the packaging. This is extremely eye catching when in the local supermarket and has no doubt influenced the decision of many to purchase Ferrero Rocher as they look extremely delectable sitting there in their shiny packaging just screaming out to be bought and to be eaten.
Once you remove the gold outer packaging of the Rocher, you are greeted with the most wonderful scent of hazelnut. Obviously if you're not a hazelnut fan, Ferrero Rocher is probably not the best option for you given that there is a whole hazelnut surrounded by a light hazelnut cream encased inside a knobbly hazelnut dashed package. For fans of hazelnut the Ferrero Rocher is an absolute delight, and complete with a crispy outer shell which is topped with milk chocolate and a sprinkling of chopped hazelnuts it is bound to go down a treat.
The taste of Ferrero Rocher is one that I thoroughly adore. The creamy hazelnut filling is not too dissimilar to Nutella, and each flavour here seems to compliment one another and make for a massively enjoyable nibble. Obviously the chocolate needs to be chewed well given the large presence of hazelnut within the product, and I myself am a lazy eater whom normally this would annoy greatly, however the enjoyment I gain from Ferrero Rocher is so magnificent that this fact really does not worry me in the slightest.
All in all, Ferrero Rocher is a product I would wholeheartedly recommend to all hazelnut fans out there in the world. One reservation I do have with the product however is in the high mark up price. Although the chocolates are stylishly wrapped and presented, Ferrero Rocher's are clearly not a costly product to produce. Nutella is a relatively inexpensive product as are hazelnuts, two of the most vital ingredients of Ferrero Rocher. Given this, why it should standardly cost around the £5 mark to buy a box of 24 of these is beyond me. That said, Ferrero Rocher is a product which I personally will continue to purchase regardless of the high mark up price as the flavour is one that I love - a product I have been a fan of for some time and no doubt will continue to be so for the foreseeable future.
Summary: Ferrero Rocher truly are a favourite of mine, an absolute treat of a chocolate.

- 12/01/08 For the benefit of the chocolate woman; the milk chocolate is mysteriously milky, the wafer wonderful and the hazelnuts delectable. |
