Advantages: taste

Disadvantages: too small

Remember those ads - just 1 calorie per tic tac. I always wondered what the heck one calorie really looked like, or meant. Well, now I know an adult man needs 2000 calories a day, so I guess there's the answer: eat 2000 of these a day and you'll be fine. Anyway, that's a digression.

Tic Tacs are one of those little oddities:they're not a 'sweet', in that they are too small to offer any real sugar rush, and they're very small when thought of as breath mints. They kid of sit outside of the box, but they're still very likeable.

Priced at around 50p per box, you can expect to find around 25 Tic Tacs within.

The flavour is similar to the common taste of toothpaste, so again the medicinal feeling of cleanliness pervades these little ones. Being so small, they swish around your mouth, clinking off your teeth and making a very satisfying noise.

They don't have a strong flavour, and so the taste is softer than many other mints, but refreshing and gentle at the same time.

In my experience, one is not enough, and so I pop a few in my mouth at a time, chinking around together. This stimulates saliva, and makes the whole thing really nice.

Texture-wise, they are very hard and plasticy, but you can bite through them in you try. Inside, it's much the same - not at all powdery, and even if you mush them up into a paste it's not very dry.

There are 1.5 calories per tic-tac, but because they're so small, one is hardly enough, so it becomes irrelevant per Tic Tac.

As a breath mint, they're not the best, giving only a small amount of gentle aroma, and as a sweet they fail to satisfy the need for copious amounts of sugar, but the joy comes in the physical act of sloshing them around your mouth; because they're so small, they get everywhere, and freshen up bits of your mouth that other breath mints can't reach.

All in all, a unique little product that is beaten by others in many ways, yet still remains desirable.

Summary: do it

Eat 2000 of these per day and you'll spend it all on the loo :p

I always think they make my teeth feel 'dirty' thanks to the sugar in them. Give me sugar free gum any day.
