If I have toast or bread, I want butter on it and lots of it. I adore the flavour of rich, creamy, unsalted butter. It really is quite unhealthy the amount that I eat of it. So in a bid to cut down on my cholesterol I searched for a tasty spread that was not too 'margarine' in flavour. I am not keen on the olive oil spreads or the cheaper brands of 'Butter Alternatives'. So when Flora bought out their 'Buttery' I thought that this might just be the answer to my problem.-

Flora is an excellent brand and one that has a solid reputation, so I was more than happy to part with my cash and begin my trial of this NEW Flora Buttery. The thing that I really like about the Flora brand of products, is that they are rich in Omega's which purport to 'Keep your heart Healthy'. I notice that the Saturates contained within this product are only 1.6g as opposed to butter's highly unhealthy 5.4g, so this is a good start. Now, I am never going to find a spread that totally has the thick rich, creamy flavour of butter but as long as it tastes a little like then I shall be happy.

The container is the same shape and size as the original Flora and it comes in a sunny shade of yellow with the Flora heart upon the top. It states that it has a 'Buttery Taste' and that it will also keep your heart healthy. The Buttery is rich in Omegas 3 & 6 and it has a 'New Improved Taste'. The weight of the tub is 500g and the price is £1.68 as from Tesco. The carton is freezable which is useful for times when this product is on 'Special Offer'.

The appearance of the Buttery spread is thick and creamy and bright yellow in colouring. The aroma is pleasant with no strong obvious butter smell coming from it. On tasting the Buttery I can taste the original flora flavour but with a creamier consistency. The flavour does not taste like butter, but it does have a pleasant and creamy taste and one that I could happily put up with as an alternative.

The description of 'Buttery' might be stretching it a little, however this Flora spread has a much better flavour than many of the 'so called' butter imitators. It suits me fine and the large 500g tub lasts me ages. Each 10g serving, which equates to 2 slices of bread, contains 63 calories and one third of the saturated fat of butter. It also contains Vitamins- E - B 6 - A - D- B 12 - and- Folic Acid -

'The Buttery spread is also suitable for cooking purposes including baking and shallow frying. It is made with good seed oils which are naturally rich in Omega 3 and 6 and it is 70% less saturated fat than butter and it is virtually Trans fat free, with no hydrogenated oils. Flora Buttery promises a great taste and to keep your heart healthy'.-

Well I thought the Flora Buttery was very nice. It had a good flavour to it and a creamy texture which was easy to spread. I have used it in my cooking and it is ok. It does tend to get soaked up quite quickly and disappear when shallow frying though. It's not ideal for cooking but it is useable. Basically I am happy enough with it until something better comes along. I do still buy butter from time to time as I crave the rich flavour of it, but with using Flora Buttery, it has helped me to cut down a bit. So all in all, after using it for a while now, I will give the Flora Buttery 6/10.-
