Advantages: good for eating in the mountains

Disadvantages: A bit mild for my taste

While in France last year we indulged ourselves in eating a variety of cheeses. One was Fontal. Fontal cheese is the French version of the Italian Fontina I discover when getting home to England.I have not eaten Italian Fontina I am led to believe the Italian cheese is better .

Fontal is made in large creameries in the Alps some in the French area in a valley near where we were straying

Fontal is a semi hard cheese 27% fat it is a firm with lots of small holes in it. This cheese has a golden orange brown rind. I have seen and bought it as a smallish circular disc cheese, part of a cylinder. Or a smaller portion cut from one.

We chose this cheese as it was a hard cheese to take with us in our rucksacks when we were walking. Cheese, a loaf of bread and some fruit would be our lunch on the mountaintops. We would sit and break bread and open the cellophane wrapper of the cheese and break of a little cheese for each of us. We nibble the cheese and throw away the rind.

The cheese is a mild flavour a smooth buttery flavour. This would be a good cheese to choose for a child or someone who does not like strong cheese.
Fontal makes a good melting cheese to top a pizza or to put in a mild cheese sauce.
I am afraid I cannot remember or find out how much it costs but knowing our spending habits it would not be too expensive compared with other cheeses.I am not sure if you can buy it easily in England I shall have to investigate and relive those French hillside moments

Summary: French attempt at Italian fontina lookalike cheesse

I think there are about 1000 different kinds of cheese in France, so you will never tire of subjects to write on, heehee!
