Advantages: Delicious, cheap, lovely combination of ingredients

Disadvantages: None

Do you remember a slogan from Kellogg’s quite a few years ago that read „We don’t make cereals for anyone else”? At the time I believed it. Literally. I though I was the only person they made cereals for, and I couldn’t understand how they stopped other people buying them in the supermarket. Now I know better – all they meant was that they only make Kellogg’s cereals, and no other brands. Fox are different though. As well as their own Fox-branded products, they also make “own-brands” for, among other people, Marks and Spencer’s, Sainsburys, Tesco, Safeway and Asda. So, if you think a couple of different shops’ rich tea taste pretty darn similar, you now know why. Echos are slightly different though. They’re made by Fox but only for their Fox brand. You can’t get an M&S version, so you have to buy the real thing.

Echos come in shiny blue wrappers, boasting a yellow blob containing the name in friendly red bubble writing. They’re stick shaped, like a Twix finger, and come in either single or twin combinations, alone or in packets of 6 or 12. A Honeycomb variety is also available (same idea, but shiny yellow packet) but I haven’t tried these as I wouldn’t like them. Original Echos, though, they’re the good stuff.

At university in my first year one of the girls in my hall of residence had a mum who worked for Fox’s biscuits. Not all that surprising really, since they have a big factory nearby. It’s scary how many people at uni in Manchester come from Preston, the Fylde and Yorkshire – I have to make a real effort to find non-northerners to make friends with. But I digress. She worked for Fox and every fortnight when she came to take the girl in question home for the weekend, she’d bring us a huge box of “damaged” echos – nothing really wrong with them, just not perfect enough to be wrapped up and shipped out. H
ow we looked forward to those Fridays.

If you’ve never come across an echo, let me explain. Imagine the smoothest, silkiest, thickest chocolate ever to be found outside of a Galaxy factory. Let your mind drift back to the bubbliest aero you’ve ever tasted, and remember the first time you ate a biscuit with a really good crunch. Combine the lot, any you’ve got an Echo. A generous chocolate exterior covers a crunchy strip of biscuit that’s covered with a thick white chocolate bubbly topping. It’s not a combination you’d normally think would be so wonderful, but the crispy crunchy biscuit topped with the soft melting bubbles really does make these beauties taste delicious. You can store them in the fridge but I prefer a “cool, dark place” to avoid hurting my teeth biting on the one hand, and preventing my fingers getting sticky with chocolate on the other. If it’s a hot summer day, by all means keep them in the fridge, just “de-chill” them for an hour or so before eating.

Tesco have them on sale for £1.59 for 12 individual bars. This is equivalent to 6 doubles, and since these cost about 30p each it’s not a bad deal. Single bars individually cost around 18p, and a 6 pack will set you back about 85p if I’m not mistaken.

Their website (www.foxs-biscuits.co.uk) is still under construction so I can’t get listings of nutritional info, suitability for special diets and so on, but you can contact the company in the following ways.

And since you’ve read this far, merci for the read and sorry it’s not in the best possible category – this is the nearest that exists at the moment. Will ask for it to be moved when they are able to take suggestions again :-)
