I had a house guest last night, a friend of my parents who was flying back to France this morning and last night after our wonderful meal in a local restaurant she insisted we go to Tesco to get some flowers for me and some toys for my son as a thank you! No complaints from me there. Whilst shopping my guest decided to get a 'few bits' for the morning so that she could have her favourite breakfast. She picked up a jar of Frank Cooper's Marmalade and opted for the Coarse Cut version. The building where Frank Coopers Oxford marmalade used to be manufactured is now an Arts Centre exhibiting works by Oxfordshire artists. But more interestingly it is now called `The Jam Factory`, of course a very apt name. The story started way back in the late 1800s when Franks wife Sarah started to make marmalade from a recipe that was given to her by her mother. The marmalade became so popular, particularly among the students at Oxford University that Frank opened a factory to mass produce it. When I think about marmalade I'm not sure if my first thought is a tangy, zesty topping for hot buttered toast, or a small scruffy bear clutching a mug of steaming cocoa in one hand and a large sticky sandwich in the other.......... History & Origins I was curious as to why we call this jam like substance a marmalade, and have to admit that despite extensive research the answer is still not crystal clear. Typically a definition for marmalade would seem to be: "a jelly-like preserve in which small pieces of fruit and citrus fruit rind are suspended".
