... minutes later and the pies had risen dramatically and I considered them ready. Do not put these in a shallow space in the oven as they will quickly out grow the space and you won't be able to get them out without taking their top off! When done the lid is golden brown and looks extremely appetising. It is during serving that I encounter a problem. These pies are extremely difficult to get out of the tin in one piece; in fact, it is not going to happen! No matter how much cutting and prising, these pi...more

Premium Review Fray Bentos Just Steak Pie: A canny pie (792 words)

Generally speaking I like to make my own meals from scratch, but quite often time restrains me so I generally have "emergency" meals in the cupboard. On a recent trip to Asda I came across Fray Bentos pies on offer at two for £2. I thought that this was great value and so I threw two into my trolley. I have not had these pies since I was a little girl so I was interested to see if they tasted as good as I remember! The pies come in a variety of nine flavours (mainly based around chicken and beef - none vegetarian) but I chose the "just steak" variety. The pies come in a shallow tin which is just over 15cm in diameter and you have ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review I slept with a pie... (569 words)

Having been a big fan of Frey Bentos pies since I was little (meaning slimmer than I am now), originally it was the Steak and Kidney pies I loved, infact I was drunkenly slept with one*. Then my mum started to get the Steak and 3 Veg versions when she realised my brother wasn't eating the kidney in the pies. And now she's started buying Just Steak pies. The pies them selves have all kept the same sort of ideas behind them and have themselves all been pretty much identical to look at and delicious to eat, but what exactly are they? Well coming in a fully concealed tin they stand out at the supermarket as they don't really look like they belong in the pies or ...  Read the complete review

Fray Bentos Just Steak Pie: Fray Bentos Pies - New Recipe (294 words)
by Andy F - written on 09/04/09

I have been a fan of Fray Bentos pies for many years and they have been an often consumed weekend treat along with a plateful of mash and assorted veg. However Premier Foods have repackaged and changed the recipe of all their pies over the past six months - and the change is not for the good! Whereas the previous range of Fray Bentos pies had quality steak and delicious Oxo gravy, these 'new' recipe pies are a real move downwards in the quality stakes (no pun intended). Firstly the meat content. Reportedly it is the same as the old pies, but having stock of both, their seems much less in the new pies but worst of all the quality is ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review A Canned Pie (475 words)

I always associate Fray Bentos pies with old people for some reason, my grandma always had one in her cupboard and they dont seem like a very fashionable option. I've read a few favourable reviews on Fray Bentos pies in the past few months and decided to revisit them at some point. They were special offer last week in Asda for just £1 each, normal selling price is £1.79. The just steak pie is the newest pie in the Fray Bentos range. I used to love steak and kidney but it seems that offal has gone out of fashion and I bet most kids have never tasted it. The first problem was opening the can. Just use a tin opener I hear you say but I ...  Read the complete review

Fray Bentos Just Steak Pie: Tin Trouble (152 words)

I have been a fan of fray bentos pies for many years they are delicious however I am disappointed in these pies now. It is almost impossible to open the can without injury to either yourself or the tin opener. I can only assume that they are using a different metal. My last attempt took two of us one turning the tin and one operating the manual tin opener. Our all singing all dancing one will not open these tins as they are too big. Once you are in and the pies are cooked they are still as delicious as ever. Hopefully Fray Bentos can improve this before there is a total disaster somewhere or we stop buying them all together.I do not have a problem with the pie ...  Read the complete review
