Advantages: Contain a lot of calcium

Disadvantages: Texture similar to plastic

This review is for the twisted variety of cheese strings. They are available in packs of 4, 8, 12 and 16 priced at £1.12, £2.26, £3.28 and £4.24 respectively (Tescos), currently the 8 packs are on buy one get one free in Tesco until 1st September. I have also seen them in smaller shops available on their own for around 50p. The multipacks are made of plastic, being dark purple in colour with cartoon images of cheese strings on. There is a clear part of plastic which allows you to see the product. Inside, each cheese string is wrapped individually in plastic. There is a small tear at the top meaning they are easy to open, especially for children. Each cheese has a different cartoon on the top of the wrapper and an interesting fact making them really appealing to children. Each cheese is around 4 inches long and is in the shape of a cylinder. The twisted variety consists of light cheese and orange cheese.

Cheese strings are made of 100% cheese. The idea is to tear off bits of the cheese string in order to eat the cheese in thin strips rather than whole. Personally, I believe this makes them taste far superior. When eating the cheese string I believe them to taste quite mild and rather plasticky. The texture is very similar to that of plastic which has put me off in the past. However, although I say they taste mild, there is quite a strong aftertaste which remains in the mouth for sometime after finishing the product. They are not of the same texture as cheese singles and instead are much more solid and remind me more of regular hard cheese.

Personally, I enjoy these from time to time as I am often put off due to the plastic texture and the high fat content. I believe that they do not provide you with the taste sensations that a good flavoured, strong hard cheese does. However, they are very popular with children and my niece would eat them all day if she could! They are good for lunchboxes as they provide a good amount of calcium for children (25% RDA). However, they are not very good for you, a cheese string provides you with 69 calories, 5g of fat (3.1g which saturates) and 0.4g of salt.

I would recommend these for any fans of cheese or anyone looking for a snack slightly healthier than crisps or chocolate.

Summary: An ok alternative snack
