Advantages: healthy, natura
Disadvantages: none (except that my son doesn't want to eat it yet)
I was looking for some new treatment for my elder son. I found Cheestrings on offer, so I took a pack of 8. I'm glad that this one was on offer not the larger pack. We had to eat all instead of my son.
First impression
---------------------
The Cheestrings come in a purple package. There is a large Cheestring figure on the left and above his head you can see the Cheestring label written with big purple letters. It has some transparent part of wrapper, so you can see the product. Each string is wrapped separately.
I found them among the dairy products where the different types of cheese are. It was 30% cheaper then other times. Its full price in Sainsbury's is 2.27 pounds for a pack of 8x21 g. In Tesco you can buy these for 2.26 pounds on full price or now it is on offer (3 for 2). It is quite expensive. I found a 30p off coupon in the wrapper which means I can buy Cheestrings shots 30 pence cheaper at any retailer.
Ingredients
---------------
It is 100% natural cheese coloured with natural colour (annatto). It is made from medium fat hard cheese. They gently heat and stretch the cheese to get this form. Each string is 21 grams of cheese which means that they used one glass of milk to get the required quantity of cheese to make a string.
Nutritional information
-----------------------------
As cheese is made of milk it is a natural source of calcium (143 mg in each string). Each string supplies us with 69 kcal which is not too much. Its fat content is quite high: 5 grams in each string (21 g). As it is made of milk it contains a lot of protein too. In one string there are 5.9 grams of protein. It is a healthy and natural treat for children and adults as well.
My opinion
---------------
On the day of purchase my son didn't want to taste it at all. Next day he tasted it but didn't like it. I tried a lot of tricks but there was no success. We had to eat all the 8 Cheestrings. They were really yummy.
They are packed individually. It is really practical, for us it was convenient too. We tried to serve it to my son several times. I even wrapped it back and put back into the fridge and took out later. The individual wrapper helps to avoid sticking them to each other and prevents also dry surface.
The cheese strings have very nice texture. It is different from normal cheese because of the melting process. It is still hard but it is creamy as well.
I don't really understand why my son didn't like it. I will buy sometimes in the future because it is a healthy treat and it is really funny. I think when my younger one will have a few teeth I will buy again. He can always make my elder one eat. What I give the younger one I have to give the elder one too.

Summary: I will definitely buy again

- 05/10/09 Cheesestrings work out at around £13 per kilo for which I would expect some seriously tasty cheese. Instead they are relatively tasteless with an unpleasant texture and guilty of over-packaging. However, my kids love them! |
