Advantages: GREAT TASTE

Disadvantages: HIGH FAT CONTENT

I have always been a big fan of potato crisps. I buy them regularly with my weekly shopping. My family are also very partial to a packet of crisps.

I was delighted, when out shopping a few months ago, to see that Golden Wonder crisps were back on the supermarket shelves. These have always been my favourites and have been missing from the shelves for some time.

Golden Wonder potato crisps were first launched way back in 1947 by a gentleman called William Alexander.

In 1962 Golden Wonder produced the very first flavoured crisps. This was their Cheese and onion flavour. As time went on they continued to develop new flavours.

Unfortunately in January 2006 the company went into receivership. Over the previous two years they had sustained significant losses. This was mostly due to the stiff competition from Walkers.

In February 2006 a company called Tayto (NI) Limited stepped in and bought over Golden Wonder. The company is now known as Tayto Golden Wonder although they still use Golden Wonder as their trademark.

Towards the end of 2007 they relaunched their crisps. They introduced new flavours and also new packaging.

The crisps come in a foil bag and each bag contains 25g of crisps.
My favourite was always cheese and onion flavour so that is what I bought.

When I opened the bag I could smell more of the onion flavour than the cheese. I popped one in my mouth and it was nice and crunchy. The onion flavour was more distinct at first but the cheese flavour did come through very quickly. They tasted great and also tasted exactly how I had expected them to. After finishing the bag, the taste did stay in my mouth until I had a glass of juice. There was also a slightly salty taste on my lips. This also disappeared after a glass of juice.

Golden Wonder crisps come in the following flavours:

Cheese and Onion
Pickled Onion
Spring Onion
Ready Salted
Salt and Vinegar
Sausage and Tomato
Roast Chicken
Prawn Cocktail
Smokey Bacon
Tomato Ketchup

A 25g bag of crisps contains:

129 calories
7.9g of fat
0.6 of sugar
0.5g of salt

Apparantly it takes one medium sized potato to make a 25g bag of crisps. It tells you on the pack that they are lightly peeled and are then cooked in sunflower oil.

I paid just 88p in my local Tesco for a packet of six. You can also buy individual bags which cost around 35p.

You can buy them in multipacks of six, ten, twelve and twentyfive.
They are also available in boxes of thirty two and forty.

Golden Wonder are once again widely available in Scotland and I have been told they are available in Tesco supermarkets in the rest of the U.K.

Summary: I HOPE THEY DO NOT DISAPPEAR AGAIN
