Advantages: Keeps a long time, toppings are nice
Disadvantages: Base is terrible
Normally I'm a fan of making my own pizzas - not the base itself you understand, but grabbing a large naan, covering it with tomato puree and grated cheese, then adding my own toppings. 10 mins in the oven and it's done! A great way to monitor what's in your food and great for catering for people who like different toppings.
But last week when it was so icy and I managed to make it to the shops a grand total of once (in about 2 weeks really), I decided to opt for convenience and grabbed one of these. I literally didn't have much choice as not only was it just a corner shop, but it was a corner shop that had been panic raided by people in the same position.
I ended up with a Goodfellas Deep Pan Pizza; it was too big to fit in my freezer drawer so I ripped off the cooking instructions and chucked the box away - so I can't remember what flavour it was, but it definitely had chicken on it.
I had to cook it in the oven for 22-25 minutes (over double that of my normal pizzas - so much for convenience!). I wasn't too impressed by the toppings as although there was a good amount of cheeze and tomato across the pizza, unlike Weight Watchers and Asda's own, there was only a bit of chicken and that had mainly been placed in the middle. So I quickly chopped up a couple of mushrooms and added them.
When it was cooked, I sat down with half of it and some potato wedges and veg and tried it out. It was fairly good, but the base was very bread tasing and as it was so thick, really dominated the taste of everything else. Don't get me wrong, I'm the first to order deep pan when I have a choice and I love crust, but this base was pretty dry and I thought it let the pizza down.
I had the other half cold for a kind of breakfast the next day at work ('Are you eating cold pizza?! You're such a student!') and it actually tasted much better cold, and didn't look too bad either.
At the crazy corner shop price of £3.29 I definitely won't be buying this again as I could make my own for about £1, and the base let it down. If you've got the space and they are cheap though, they are probably quite a good thing for emergencies or parties - though you could buy a much cheaper one and add your own toppings and it would most likely be nicer.
Summary: I won't buy this again
