Advantages: Fresh taste. High cocoa content is good for you!
Disadvantages: Not enough fondant for my liking
I have tested a bar of Green and Blacks Dark Chocolate with Mint, which I bought from Tesco this morning: I was looking for something chocolatey and noticed that these were on offer: Any two for £3.00 (I also bought the Butterscotch variety).
The bar I have is the 100g size, this seems to be the biggest size that Green and Blacks produce - they do not seem to manufacture the gut-busting giant bars like Cadburys, which is probably just as well as it helps chocoholics to control themselves a little bit I guess!
The bar is in a matt brown wrapper, as is all the range, and each flavour has a different coloured strip at the top: In this case, it's green to represent Mint.
In embossed gold lettering, the wrapper tells me that the chocolate is organic and contains 70% cocoa, which means it is proper dark chocolate. It also carries the usual warning that it may contain traces of soya, nuts and cereal, and also states that it definitely does contain Milk Ingredient and Alcohol.
I had not realised when I bought it that this would contain alcohol, and this was a bit of a surprise, however the alcohol is eighth on the list of ingredients, so pretty low down.
This chocolate is filled with a peppermint fondant filling, made from all natural, organic ingredients. Opening the gold foil wrapper, I see that this is pre-divided into little squares.
The chocolate looks really dark and glossy, almost black. Breaking off a piece, I can smell the mint, which I adore.
Tasting it, I can taste mostly dark chocolate and not too much peppermint. There is also not much sensation or texture of the fondant filling, all I can feel in my mouth is the chocolate.
This may or may not please you, that is personal taste - Personally I was expecting more peppermint fondant to the amount of dark chocolate. Having said that, this is still a top quality product, really smooth and tasty.
I was probably expecting something more akin to After Eights, where the fondant to chocolate ratio is more equal :)
(Does this translate to 'I am just not posh enough for Green and Blacks' lol)
Summary: A top chocolate brand with a hint of mint
