Advantages: Intense chocolate and sophisiticated flavours that compliment red wine

Disadvantages: Slightly more expensive than other chocolate collections

This is surely the best box of chocolates on the mass market.

It is hard to think of what life was like before Green and Blacks chocolate bars hit the market. The darkest you could get in your local sweet shop was the sugary Bournville bars. Old Jamaican was the height of the exotic. Even the dark chocolate red bounty was not universally stocked.

Green and Black's Maya Gold hit the market twelve years ago. Organic Dark Chocolate with minimum 70% cocoa solids, with orange oils and spices. I remember tasting it at someone's house after dinner. Proper grown up chocolate, so intense it was almost savoury.

Since then, other flavours have followed - dark chocolate, intense milk chocolate, almond, mint, raisin and hazlenut, white chocolate, butterscotch and latterly cherry and ginger. (There have also been some Christmas varieties this year which I haven't tried.)

The Organic Seasonal Assortment - which is identical to the Chocolate Collection - is the chocolate box culmination of the development of the brand.

Many of the chocolate varieties are strongly identifiable with the chocolate bars.

The Ginger Baton is a stick of stem ginger encased in dark chocolate.

The Almond Cluster is made up of splinters of almonds held together by milk chocolate.

The Sour Cherry Truffle is very reminiscent of the cherry flavour bar, with bitter dark chocolate mixing with the tang of the cherries.

White Chocolate Truffle - which if you like the bars you will love.

My favourite is the Organic Orange Fudge. Orange centres and fudge are generally flavours to be avoided, but here the fudge is sweet and salty at the same time, with Mayan Gold orange oils and spices, all wrapped in intense dark chocolate. I would love them to market this variety on its own. They taste amazing with red wine.

Other varieties in the box are completely new to the Green and Black's range.

The Organic Caramel Ball is liquid caramel encased in a ball of milk chocolate. But this is as far from a rolo as you can get. The caramel is salty and contrasts beautiful with the chocolate.

Turkish Delight - rose turkish delight with milk chocolate.

Hazlenut Praline - with milk chocolate - a little sweet for me.

Organic Vanilla Fudge - again sweet and salty fudge wrapped in milk chocolate.

They are a little more expensive that most chocolate assortments. Usually #7.99, but I've seen them as high as #8.99 and on offer as Asda for #5.99.

These are chocolates for grown ups only. They taste divine with a glass of red wine at the end of the meal, and are strong and intense enough to satisfy you with one, maximum two chocolates. In that regard, they are good value.

They taste best of all straight from the fridge.
Highly recommended.

Summary: An excellent chocolate selection
