Advantages: Organic, Fair Trade Policy, Delicious
Disadvantages: Fattening??
Ah, chocolate.. the Food of the Gods! And don’t let anyone tell you different (I mean, all this talk about Ambrosia being the food of the Gods…I mean, I have nothing against rice pudding per se…but compared to chocolate..) Anyway, I know that chocolate is really the food of the Gods and that’s because the botanical name of the cocoa tree, from which we get all chocolate, is “Theobroma Cacao” which translated from the Greek means…you got it…”food of the Gods.”So there! If you are a chocolate lover (and if you aren’t then you and I are so diametrically opposed that we will never see eye to eye) then you really do want the very best chocolate you can buy. Which is Green and Blacks Organic Chocolate.Happily for us chocoholics (definition: someone whose craving for and delight in chocolate suggests addiction – I can live with that!) Green and Blacks chocolate comes in a number of varieties. DARK Made from 70% cocoa solids and a minimal amount of sugar, this is the piece de resistance of chocolate. It is smooth, rich, dark and utterly irrestibible. Many purists maintain that this is the only type of chocolate worth the name. The intensity of the cocoa flavour is brought out by the small amount of sugar added. This is the best chocolate to use in cooking because of its wonderful flavour. Like all Green and Blacks chocolate, this contains ingredients which have been organically grown and is suitable for vegetarians and vegans. It is salt-free, wheat free and contains absolutely no genetically modified ingredients. Nut allergy sufferers, however, should be aware that the product may contain traces of nut. This product is available in 100gand 20g sizes. Look for the brown wrapper. MILK Green and Black’s milk chocolate is rich and creamy and sumptious. It is made to the same exacting standards as the dark chocolate, but cont
ains added milk. This product carries the Fairtrade mark, which means that a fair proportion of what you pay goes directly to the cocoa bean farmers. Again, it is available in 100g and 20g sizes. Look for the purple wrapper. MAYA GOLD This is an exquisite chocolate made with 55% cocoa solids, and which contains orange and spices from the rainforest. It is a unique product to be savoured slowly and with due respect. It contains natural flavourings only, and organic vanilla. Once again, this product varies the Fairtrade Mark.It is available in 100g and 20g sizes. Look for the orange wrapper. HAZELNUT AND CURRANT Oh, what a delight! The smooth, rich flavour of the dark chocolate is perfectly complemented by the fat, juicy organic currants and the crunchy hazelnuts. Try melting this chocolate slowly over a low heat (or preferably in a bain marie) and then pour over vanilla ice cream.Sublime.This product is only available in the 100g size (oh, damn!) Look for the blue wrapper. WHITE Frowned upon as being “not real chocolate” by purists, nonetheless I adore this one. It takes me back to my childhood, but is more sophisticated than the one children adore. This chocolate is made from full-cream milk from cows that graze only on organic pastures, and it contains vanilla from the Reunion Islands it is smooth, sweet and comforting. Just the one to curl up with in front of a soppy film. It is available in 100g and 20g sizes. Look for the white wrapper. MINT A special, dark and bitter chocolate which encases a filling of luscious mint sweetened with organic honey. Cool, crisp and utterly delicious, a real after-dinner treat, if you can bear to share it. It is made from 70%cocoa solids and contains peppermint oil and menthol, both organically grown (naturally!) It is available in the 100g sizes. Look for the turquoise wrapper. FOOD FACTS Calories…. do yo
u really want to know? Okay then, I’m sure we all know that chocolate contains quite a bit of sugar and fat. Most of the products listed contain round about 500 cals per 100g and between 25-37% fat…oh heck…who cares! Chocolate contains phenyl ethylamine (PEA) which raises blood pressure and the heart rate. It is the chemical which is released when you are feeling passionate and sexy. Chocolate mimics the feeling of being in love, which is why chocolate is often given as a love token. Food of the Gods? You bet it is!!
