Advantages: Creamy ice cream, real strawberry pieces, biscuit pieces
Disadvantages: The price, the calories and the fat content
I first came across Haagen-Dazs Strawberry Cheesecake Flavour Ice Cream when one of my friends bought it round when we were having a DVD night and to be honest, nearly every time I settle down for the evening to watch a DVD, this ice cream comes out.
About Haagen-Dazs
Haagen-Dazs is unsurprisingly an American Brand and wasn't actually available to buy in the UK until 1987. Haagen-Dazs actually only started out with three flavours: vanilla, chocolate and coffee. With these flavours being so popular the brand quickly developed, with them producing a wider variety of flavours for the consumer to choose between.
Packaging
This ice cream comes in a standard ice cream thick cardboard container which holds 500ml. The lid is also made of cardboard and pop off fairly easily (although can sometimes be difficult if you try to open it straight from the freezer as the lid tends to freeze to the tub!). The tub itself is red and gold in colour which is Haagen-Dazs colours. The lid is black and so is the band that runs around the middle of the tub. The Haagen-Dazs logo is written on the front of the tub, and the flavour is written on the black band. There is also a picture of a few strawberries on the front.
Price
I tend to buy this ice cream at Tesco where it costs £3.78 for a 500ml tub so compared to other ice creams, it's a bit more expensive but worth every penny. Occasionally I will buy this ice cream at my local Blockbuster when I am renting a movie and here a 500ml tub costs £5.
Taste
Upon opening the tub, you can see the strawberry and cheesecake pieces mixed in with the ice cream. The ice cream itself is vanilla and is a pale sort of beige colour. The ice cream is very creamy I should imagine that just the ice cream alone without the piece would be very yummy.
The strawberry pieces are also very tasty and actually taste like real strawberries as appose to strawberry flavouring like a lot of other ice creams use. The strawberry pieces are squashed so actually look more like jam once you find it within the ice cream and quite often you can find some large chunks of strawberry and when eaten with this ice cream, it is just delicious.
The final ingredient in this ice cream is the biscuit bits which are meant to resemble the base of a cheesecake. There are by far my favourite bits. According to Haagen-Dazs these biscuit pieces are 'pecan nut cookie pieces' but I don't think they really taste like Pecan. To me, they taste very similar to Shortbread. I half expected the biscuit piece to be soggy, after all, they have been sitting in the ice cream but I was very pleased to find that the biscuit pieces are very crunchy and very tasty.
Overall, I think all the ingredients work really well together, the creamy ice cream contrasts really well with the strawberries as they are slightly tangy and the crunchy biscuits make a very nice change for ice cream as it gives it texture as appose to just eating the ice cream, you actually have little pieces that you can chew on.
Range
I did a bit of research to try and find out how many varieties of ice cream Haagen-Dazs produce but unfortunately, I was unable to find any figures. I can tell you that they certainly produce a wide range of ice creams. The thing I like about Haagen-Dazs (as well as Ben and Jerry's) is that they experiment with their ice cream and rather then producing just bog standard flavours such as chocolate strawberry and vanilla, they mix ingredients into the ice cream that you would expect. A few example of their ice cream range include flavours such as Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, White Chocolate Raspberry and Chocolate Peanut Butter.
As well as producing ice cream, Haagen-Dazs also do a large range of sorbet, light ice cream, ice cream bars, reserves and frozen yoghurt.
Summary
I would 100% recommend this ice cream. If you have never tried Haagen-Dazs then you have no idea what you are missing. The ice cream, even the normal flavours such as strawberry and chocolate are so creamy that they really stand apart from other brands of chocolate.
The ingredients that Haagen-Dazs mix in with the ice cream really provide that little something extra.
There are only really two downsides to this ice cream - one being the price and the other being that a 100ml of ice cream (a fifth of the tub!) will give you 226 calories and 16 grams of fat so this is extremely fattening.
Summary: My favourite ice cream, really creamy and extremely tasty!
