Advantages: MMMM!, MELTS IN YOUR MOUTH , TASTES LIKE THE REAL THING
Disadvantages: DOESN'T LAST LONG ENOUGH, BAD FOR YOUR WAISTLINE
For my husbands birthday recently, I decided to prepare a romantic meal at home. Having young children makes it difficult to go out for the night, so this seemed the perfect compromise. With the main course simmering away gently and my meringue mixture cooking in the oven in preparation of my passionfruit pavlova, I poured myself a glass of wine and took it through to the living room. The kids were tucked up in bed and hubby was on his way home from work, so seemed like the perfect time to put my feet up. Somehow I got caught up in the action of Eastenders and forgot all about my pavlova. I could smell a sickly, sweet burning smell so jumped up and ran into the kitchen. @#!? My pudding was ruined. What was I going to do now? I searched the cupboards for inspiration, but the clock was ticking. Not enough time. So, ice-cream it had to be. I remembered a few weeks ago I had purchased a tub of Haagen Daaz Bailey's ice-cream, but had totally forgotten its existence since my plunge into a new diet. The tub had long since been forgotten and had crawled its way down to the bottom of the freezer. I pulled it out and kissed it, praying that the meal would be a success. Sad to say, the ice-cream went down a treat, I was hoping to get it all to myself, but no such luck. This ice-cream really hit the spot and is definitely not one for the kids - it's far too good to share! As with all Haagen Daaz ice-cream, this one was creamy, rich and extremely high in calories. Made from fresh cream and skimmed milk it's easy to see why. I couldn't find any nutritional information on the carton and couldn't care less what it contained anyway, I was on a mission to see if this was as good as its claims. The diet could wait another day or so. You could easily be fooled into thinking that you were scooping frozen Bailey's, but the ice-cream only contains 4% of the liquer. It tastes like the real thing despite the small am
ount of alcohol in it. The ice-cream is identical in colour - creamy, coffee coloured. It smells gorgeous too. Very similar to the old-fashioned Rum and Raisin. The ice-cream can be found at some supermarkets, but you have to search for it. It's not widely available yet, but I bought it from Tesco. It is packaged in the typical Haagen Daaz cardboard, flowerpot shaped tub, and is burgundy and cream in colour, with the famous company logo emblazened on the side, along with a Bailey's company badge alongside. The lid is gold coloured and made from plastic. Coming in at around at the princely sum of £3.49 for a 450ml tub, this ice-cream is really worth its weight in gold. For special occasions it is worth pushing the boat out that little bit further. All I can say is that I am so glad my pavlova turned out to be a disaster. Bailey's ended up saving the day. Here's a tip for when you try the ice-cream. Pour a drop of Bailey's Liquer over the top of the ice-cream before serving. Mmmm! Delicious! Enjoy! Or save it all for me!

- 03/08/03 Out of all the Haagen-Dazs flavours, this (and Vanilla) would have to be my favourite. |
