Karenuk is a bad influence. As if it wasn?t bad enough that I was already addicted to Ben and Jerry?s ice cream, she introduced me to Haagen-Dazs and I now find myself buying tubs of this highly calorific and pricey frozen dessert!

One of the first flavours she enticed me with was Banoffee Banana Caramel Pie. Goodness, even the name of it is enough to get me salivating.

PACKAGING

The background colour to the tub is burgundy and gold, which looks extremely elegant and promises a refined and exquisite dessert inside. In the foreground is a picture of what is presumably supposed to be a slice of banana caramel pie.

The pie has what looks like a type of cheesecakey biscuit base, on top of which is a thick layer of banoffee paste mixture, coated with an absolutely dripping layer of pure caramel, all topped off with slices of fresh banana. It implies that within the tub is an ice cream representation of the original pie, containing all the flavours that have been so enticingly drawn on the tub.

I couldn?t wait to open it?.

THE ICE CREAM

The ice cream was a pale yellow in appearance and it looked as though all the ingredients of a banana pie had been thrown in and stirred up. Ripples of caramel could be seen and lumps of pecan nut cookie pieces were poking up from the surface, like succulent icebergs promising even deeper enjoyment beneath.

The ice cream was very smooth and creamy and was the most realistic banana flavour I have come across. It was sweet at first but after a while seemed to develop a slightly bitter edge, as though it contained semi-ripe bananas. Luckily not too sweet, as I had feared a banana pudding may have been.

The caramel swirls added another gorgeous flavour which complemented the banana perfectly. The pecan nut cookie pieces were delicious and added variety of texture which made the ice cream more interesting. However, they were not crunchy and obtrusive but s
oft and crumbly and melted in the mouth together with the ice cream.

THE SLIPPERY SLOPE

I can already feel the stirrings of another love affair with ice cream creeping up on me. I would hope that my friends would try to steer me away from this further addiction and yet Karenuk took to me to Sainsburys where they are currently doing an offer of two tubs of Haagen-Dazs for only £5.00 (the normal price being £3.49 each). How can I possibly resist temptation under such circumstances?

I?ve been getting cravings during the evenings and have started making trips to the local supermarket just to buy ice cream to sate my lust. The experience is glorious at the time but the next morning I wake feeling tremendously guilty at the vast quantity of calories I have consumed and yet knowing that it won?t be long before I succumb again.
