“The deepest, darkest, most delicious chocolate ice cream in its smoothest form, combined with real chocolate fudge which melts on your tongue...heaven” What’s this about fudge pieces? I don’t remember any of those! Well, I will confirm that shortly. As I sit here writing this, I have a tub of Häagen Dazs Belgian Chocolate ice cream sitting beside me. I’m waiting for it to soften enough for me to eat some without having to burst a blood vessel in the process of getting some out of the tub!! As most people know, the ice cream is hard to get out of the tub when it has come straight from the freezer, so a little warming should make the whole process easier, and gives me a chance to write a little background for you. According to information provided at Haagendazs.com, they have been making ice cream for over thirty five years, very interesting. More interesting is that they are actually a “mega brand” name that belongs to Pillsbury!! I never knew this, and thought it was worth mentioning. Another thing worth mentioning is the fact that they call the ice cream itself “super premium ice cream”, largely due to the quality of the products they claim to use in it I suspect, and also probably to justify the price you have to pay for it too. In my local Asda, a 500ml tub like the one I have sitting beside me costs £2.94. So what do they put in it? A full list of ingredients can be found below, along with nutritional values, but in essence they use the following; Fresh cream, fresh skimmed milk, fresh egg yolk (which acts as an emulsifying agent and has been double pasteurised making it safe for consumption), sugar, the best fruit, the finest Dutch cocoa, and “pure vanilla from the finest vanilla beans”. “All our ice cream products are suitable for lacto-ovo vegetarians” – in case TigerTiger and others were wondering {:0) “No artificial flavourings or
colours are used - it is the Häagen-Dazs practice to find better natural alternatives”. So that’s good then! But what does it taste like?! Well, this ice cream is very chocolaty, but not as sweet as you would imagine. The dark chocolate flakes in it (are these the fudge pieces mentioned in the description above?) are slightly bitter, as dark chocolate tends to be, and balances out the flavours. They melt very easily too, so you aren’t left with a mouth full of melting dark chocolate and nothing else. I can’t really tell if it is creamy or not as the taste of chocolate is so strong, it is very smooth though. After having several scoops, I have found nothing else that looks even remotely like fudge, so I am guessing the little flecks that are present throughout the ice cream ARE the bits of fudge. So here are the ingredients of this product in full: Fresh cream, skimmed milk, dark Belgium chocolate (13%)(chocolate liquor, sugar, emulsifier: Soya lecithin, natural flavouring: vanilla), sugar, chocolate chunk with vegetable oil (10 %) (Chocolate ((sugar, chocolate, cocoa butter, emulsifier: Soya lecithin, natural flavouring: vanilla)), cottonseed oil, coconut oil), egg yolk, cocoa (processed with alkali), natural flavouring: vanilla And the nutritional information is as follows; Per 100ml Serving:- Energy KJ/Kcal 1191/286, Protein 4, Carbohydrate 25.5, Fat 18.6 Per 100g Serving:- Energy KJ/Kcal 1326/318, Protein 4.6, Carbohydrate 28.4, Fat 20.7 The Haagen Dazs website has recipes for you to follow, but none of them caught my attention, so I will share my own with you. If you have already read my opinion on Baileys, you will have already read about my potent concoction. For those of you who haven’t here is another rendition of it (not a copy and paste). Kathryn’s Concoction (or any other name you can think of) – serves 2 4 measures of Baileys (100ml)
2 or 3 measures of vodka (50/75ml) 4 scoops of Haagen Dazs – add more to taste. At this point blend the ingredients as much as possible, don’t worry if it isn’t smooth. Add two large sploshes of milk (or if you want to be more precise, do the blending in a measuring jug and top up to 600-660ml, but make sure you have big enough glasses to put it in, we used some that came free with Hoegaarden Beer) and blend again. Add double cream for the luxury version or top with whipped cream and crumbled flake otherwise, just drink the bog standard version, as it is which is simply divine. This wonderful alcoholic milkshake is chocolaty but not overpoweringly so. The bits of dark chocolate (fudge) sink as it settles so it needs a mix occasionally. If you don’t like bits in your drinks, try using a different ice cream, or don’t mix it up. If you do use another brand please let me know what the results were like! It’s very Moorish, and has lead to me having cravings for the stuff… not good! So from now on this drink will carry a health warning. WARNING: THIS DRINK WILL SERIOUSLY TANTILISE YOUR TASTEBUDS! Thanks for your time.. happy eating and drinking! Kathryn ~ Epiphany
