Advantages: rich, creamy, tangy lemon, chewy cheesecake pieces

Disadvantages: a little on the expensive side

A short time ago when husband and I were holidaying in Gran Canaria (you have probably noticed that we like the Canary Isles) we found a very popular little cafe. Husband picked an ice cream concoction from the pictures that were on display – it looked wonderful – a dish of chocolate and lemon cheesecake ice cream, chocolate mousse, whipped cream, wafers etc. topped with hot chocolate fudge sauce.

I don’t know if you have noticed, but when abroad, ice cream is often served with sparklers. This dream creation arrived fully lit with a couple of sparklers throwing out sparks everywhere. Well, a child might have been capable of dealing with sparklers, but not a middle-aged man, who is speeding rapidly towards old age and who bares an uncanny resemblance to Victor Meldrew. “What do I do with these?” he enquired. “Leave them in your ice cream until they burn out” I suggested. But would you really expect Victor to take any notice of his long-suffering wife? Nearby diners are now watching us with some curiosity.

With his fingers he digs into his ice cream extricating the still very much alive sparklers; burning his fingers in the process and causing him to drop the sparklers onto a very nice white and lacy tablecloth. Eventually the sparklers burn out leaving in their wake holes with large black burn marks. There is now a deathly hush over the whole café as all diners eyes are directed on us. Silence gradually changes to smirks and giggles from fellow diners. At first husband tried to hide the burn marks from the eyes of the staff by placing a plate over them, but eventually he came clean and apologised, leaving a large tip as we departed.

On the way out, he said to one of the staff members speaking very loudly and slowly, as he tends to do to anyone who he believes is not English:

“ Byyyy – the – waaay – thaat – iiiiice – creeeeam – waas –v
errrry – niiiiice - indeeed – whaat – waas – iiiiit?

In a near perfect English accent, the waiter replied:

“I’m pleased you enjoyed it Sir, it was Haagen Dazs".

On arriving back at home, I decided to treat husband to some Haagen-Dazs ice cream.

During a visit to my local Safeway, I noticed that this ice cream, normally £4.19p per tub, was on offer for £2.09p. I decided to choose Lemon Cheesecake because I know Victor, errr I mean husband, enjoyed this variety when we were on holiday.

Besides Lemon Cheesecake Haagen-Dazs produce a wide variety of ice cream flavours which include Strawberry Cheesecake, Baileys, Vanilla Caramel Brownie, Belgian Chocolate, Vanilla Choc Fudge, Caramel Cone, Toffee Crème, Choc Choc Chip, Praline and Cream, Chocolate Fudge Swirl, Chocolate Midnight Cookies, Cookie Dough Chip, Lemon Passion Pie, Cookies and Cream; plus a new flavour Tiramisi.

Haagen-Dazs is an American company founded originally in the 1920’s which has grown into a name that is well known for making top quality ice cream throughout the USA and since 1987 it’s ice creams have been available in European countries such as the UK, France, Germany and Spain. It was registered as a Company in 1961; their original ice cream flavours were vanilla, chocolate and coffee.

Haagen-Dazs prides itself in only using the finest ingredients from around the world. No artificial flavourings or colours are included in their ice cream; it is their practice to search for the best natural alternatives and at every stage of production quality tests are carried out.

Haagen-Dazs state that all of their ice creams are suitable for vegetarians, but not for vegans.

Lemon Cheesecake ice cream comes in a 500ml/ 430g tub, which is maroon and gold in colour with a picture of a slice of cheesecake on the tub and o
n the lid. The ‘best before’ date can be found on the base of the carton. On the side of the carton instructions can be found which includes the fact that the product should be kept frozen at below –18 C and once thawed it should not be refrozen. Instructions are given in several different languages.

It is advisable to let the ice cream soften slightly before eating to bring out it’s full flavour and creamy texture, so I served a small amount into a couple of dishes and left it for about a minute. As husband and I both enjoy fresh fruit, I served this ice cream with sliced bananas and strawberries.

It is very rich and creamy in taste and tangy lemon ripples through the ice cream; however, the lemon is not so sharp that it is overpowering. Although Victor did screw his face up and wince in pain, but I believe that this was due to the fact that he almost swallowed his false teeth, and nothing to do with any sharpness in the ice cream.

Small pieces of crunchy cheesecake pieces are evenly distributed throughout the ice cream. This gives it a chewy consistency with a taste of pecan. I loved finding these pieces, my tongue seems to seek them out, turn them round and round in my mouth chewing them. If you like cheesecake, you will like this ice cream.

I do feel that you do not need to eat too much of this ice cream at one sitting as it is rather rich in taste. I’m afraid Victor made rather a pig of himself finishing off the remainder of the tub and he is suffering now with a tummy ache.

It is very different to any ice cream that I have previously tried. I do feel that Haagen-Dazs have very innovative ideas when it comes to producing new varieties of fine ice cream. I would imagine that they are striving to become one of the finest ice cream producers in the world.

I also feel that this ice cream is slightly on the expensive side and there are many other ice creams that are cheape
r. The full price of this product is £4.19p and I would probably not be too keen to pay the full purchase price. However, I shall look out for special offers on Haagen-Dazs ice cream and buy this again in the future. (Safeway often have special offers on Haagen-Dazs products).

Apparently the United Kingdom’s best selling Haagen-Dazs flavours are Pralines and Cream, Belgian Chocolate and Vanilla. I don’t feel that Lemon Cheesecake will ever be amongst the most popular, but I liked it and if you like ice cream, I would recommend that you put this on your shopping list.

PS. I have another ice-cream story about a large tub of frozen ice-cream and a 5 hour aircraft flight, but I will save that for another day…..
