Advantages: Tastes good
Disadvantages: Tastes TOO good
Pleasure is the path to joy Haagen-Dazs Ice Cream, Praline and Cream Pleasure is the path to joy, so the advert tells us. Well damn me, if the path to joy is this good, who needs heaven when they die? We all have our favourite and not-so-favourite ice creams, and this has got to be my number one, without doubt. I grew up with vanilla ice cream, and Neopolitan ice cream as a treat (Cor, remember that?!), but I only remember Haagen-Dazs being available from my early teens (which would have been the early nineties) Being a skint kid, as I was, I was reluctant to shell out so much more money for a small tub of ice cream, when I knew I could get a lot more, for a lot less, of a less fancy brand. As time went on, however, I found that I wanted more. Ice cream is great, but if you have it all the time, it can get boring, so you need to add something to the ice cream to make it better. (I know you're all drawing your own similes here, but stick with me, ok, as I'm still talking about ice cream!) For me, the inclusion of cookie dough into an ice cream was too much to resist. I should have listened to my peers, should have paid heed to government advertising - Just Say No! (or was that Grange Hill?) I dabbled, and now I was hooked. Having tried just a little at first, I found myself wanting more, and different too. Praline and Cream came along eventually and we just clicked. Popping the lid, and peeling off the wrapper, resisting the urge to lick the gooey caramel that's always stuck on the underside, you're immediately hit with a sweet, though not distinct, smell. Someone once said that it reminded them of butterscotch, which I can agree with at a stretch, but would personally say that you can smell the caramel above anything, with perhaps a touch of vanilla too. Try to leave the ice cream for 5-10 minutes before diving in, as this will give the ice cream time to soften a little. There's nothi
ng worse than diving in too early and bending your equipment, is there? I don't know how many spoons I've "Uri-Gellered" in this way! After this time, you should be able to dip into your ice cream fairly freely, and you will begin to see just how gooey the caramel is (think Galaxy Caramel gooey, as opposed to Cadbury Caramel, and you'll have an idea). It looks sickly, but mixed with the vanilla ice cream, and complimented by the sweet taste that covers the pralines, this works well. If you've left the ice-cream for a few minutes to soften before diving in, as suggested above, you should find that the more you eat, the more it has melted, and the runnier it gets. This is yummy, as you have the vanilla and caramel mixed together. My only advice would be to eat as much of it as you can before re-freezing, as this seems to make the melted ice cream taste slightly off when it comes to re-eating. Tesco.com have this listed as £3.27 for a 500ml tub. A bit expensive when you think that it's just ice cream, but worth the expense when you taste how good it is! I dread to think how many calories this holds, and I'm not going to check as I really don't fancy the guilt trip, but following the age old rule: It tastes damn good, which means the calorie intake when you eat it will be huge! (Actually, I've added the calories to the bottom of the op, so if you're of a guilty nature, don't look!) This gets five stars for taste, but a star knocked off for the price, and also for the fact that it doesn't carry a government health warning, which it should do as it's just too addictive! The Haagen Dazs website (http://www.haagen-dazs.co.uk/) describe this ice cream as follows: <You'll go nuts over the crunchy clusters of pralines and indulgently smooth swirls of toffee we've added to our perfect vanilla. Well worth spending a night at home on the sofa for... alon
e of course.> And you'll find no argument from me! ***** Please s ee below for the calories in this tub ***** A whopping 1200+ kcal per tub. My God, I feel fat now!
