Halloumi is a Turkish cheese, which originates from the Mediterranean island of Cyprus and which is registered as a protected Cypriot product within the US (but not the EU). The cheese has been around for 100’s of years and remains a popular ingredient in these parts but has only recently started to gain popularity in the UK. Halloumi is special because it is meant to be cooked and it has a unique flavour and texture with a tendency to squeak somewhat upon chewing! Halloumi is traditionally made from a mixture of goat's and sheep's milk, although nowadays the cheese tends to contain cows milk in addition. Halloumi is made by submerging fresh curds into hot ... Halloumi cheese has to be one of my favourite foods to have in the house during the summer although it is not a seasonal product in my house we tend to eat more of it in the summer. Ok for those of you who have never experienced halloumi this is a cheese that comes from Cyprus and is traditionally made with a mixture of goats and sheeps milk although industrially made halloumi tends to contain cows milk which does slightly change the taste. The cheese is white in colour and has a texture very similar to mozzarella but is much more salty in flavour as this is generally stored in salt water. For those of you watching your salt intake I would say be careful with this ... Read the complete review

Being of Cypriot descent, this wonderful cheese is a staple in my diet. I tend to buy it from the local turkish supermarket, but they do also sell it in the big supermarkets. Its usually made of goats milk or sheeps milk, but the ones in supermarkets are made with cows milk (which is why i don't buy it there, as I'm lactose intolerant). I can imagine it tasting very strange to someone who hasn't been brought up eating the stuff, but once you've tried it, i'd be surprised if you didn't like it. The cheese is white and 'rubbery' for want of a better word. Its not hard to chew but is a bit springy like rubber. You can hear it squeaking against your teeth when ... Read the complete review

Halloumi is a cheese that I first came across while on holiday in Cyprus when we were invted to have dinner with a local family who were related to the other couple we were on holiday with, well dinner was a bit of a feast cooked on the BBQ or a clay oven and this was where I first tasted Halloumi both cooked and uncooked. It is made from either goats milk or sheeps milk and it is rather different to any other cheese I have tried. It is possible to buy in this country although watch out for certain brands in superarkets which are made from cows milk and do not tatse the same according to our Cypriot friends who buy theirs from a shop in North London and ... I first stumbled upon Halloumi whilst holidaying in Cyprus, I had never heard of it and it was unlike anything I had ever tasted before! It is made from a mixture of goat and sheep milk. It is very pale white in colour and has the oddest texture ever! Anyone who has ever tasted this stuff will know what I mean! Cypriot kids call it squeeky cheese, and it really is! When you are chewing it you can actually hear it squeek! Mildly amusing i found! When I returned from my holidays I vowed that I would find it and start using it in my cooking. I couldn't find it in any tesco stores at the time. However I am sure they stock it now. I found some in ... Read the complete review
