Advantages: It tastes great, and is really versatile
Disadvantages: high salt and calorie content
Being of Cypriot descent, this wonderful cheese is a staple in my diet. I tend to buy it from the local turkish supermarket, but they do also sell it in the big supermarkets. Its usually made of goats milk or sheeps milk, but the ones in supermarkets are made with cows milk (which is why i don't buy it there, as I'm lactose intolerant).
I can imagine it tasting very strange to someone who hasn't been brought up eating the stuff, but once you've tried it, i'd be surprised if you didn't like it. The cheese is white and 'rubbery' for want of a better word. Its not hard to chew but is a bit springy like rubber. You can hear it squeaking against your teeth when you eat it, which I imagine can be surprising at first. It comes stored in a small amount of brine so I'd advise you to open the packet with some scissors over the sink.
The cheese tastes divine. Its a mild cheese and can be quite salty. If you want it to be less salty you can always rinse it in clean water before you eat it. It has a slightly tangy taste, which makes it really refreshing and great to eat in the summer.
My favourite way to eat it is to grill it untill its golden brown on top and stringy in the middle and eat with fresh crusty bread, humus and olives. Its also great over the barbecue with fresh salads and big chunks of lamb. It is really versatile.
Eat in moderation if you are watching salt or calorie intake.
Summary: Really tasty cheese :)
