Advantages: Nicely chewy, readily available
Disadvantages: Try eating just 10
It is almost Easter - and that means that I have survived over 6 weeks without chocolate, having given it up for Lent this year.
This is nothing short of a miracle, but I have to confess that I have sought solace in other yummy replacements - just one or two cakes have passed my lips over these past few weeks (thank you to all those who have had birthdays in our office recently!!) and I have bought sweets when I need a bit of a "fix" in place of my more usual selection of chocolate.
Today it was the turn of Haribo Happy Cola sweets - these are found in big bags in most newsagents, supermarkets and filling stations. Occasionally they can be found in smaller "fun size" bags, but these are not readily available.
Haribo Happy Cola bottles are gummy sweets, which taste of cola, and are moulded in the shape of a bottle......nothing unusual or unexpected there then.
They are not fizzy, so anyone expecting that "kick" from the sourness of fizzy cola bottles will be disappointed. Also, there is no variety - this is a bag containing just one type of sweet - if you want variety, then you will have to look at Haribo's other offerings, such as Star Mix or Tangfastics.
The sweets are nicely chunky - giving a good amount of chewability per sweet. When you chew them, the flavour comes through immediately. Alternatively, you can try and make these last longer by sucking on them.....this is what I try and do, but I am impatient, and end up chewing without realising after just a few seconds!
The sweets are not as sweet and sugary as some others - this means one of two things for me.....
- either I don't eat so many, because I am not getting my sugar "fix" that I need/want
- or I eat the whole packet, because they don't make me feel sick like a big bag of some others would have done!
The cola flavour is quite good (well, as good as a synthetic copy of a synthetic drink can be, I suppose) - I have certainly had a lot lot worse.
The packet tells us that one portion of these gummy yummies will have just 139 calories, with absolutely zero fat.....hurrah!!!
However, (and if something seems to good to be true, it usually is), I have just weighed out a "portion".......apparently 139 calories gives you just 10 cola bottles......hahahahaha!! Try opening a big bag of these and just eating 10......nothing short of an impossibility!!!
So, to sum up - these sweets are not so sweet, they taste ok, and if you can manage to restrict yourself to 10, they are not going to do you much harm as far as the old waistline is concerned.
But, oh, how I am looking forward to Easter and to having chocolate again!!
Summary: Stick to the small packets if you possibly can.
