Advantages: Its okish
Disadvantages: nowhere near as good as mums
As a treat this weekend I made some scones, nothing nicer than freshly baked scones strawberry jam and cream. Problem uh huhh I had no strawberry jam in the cupboard, no cream either but I did expect to find no cream.
I went to our local shop only 3 minutes walk away. I bought some cream and looked at the range of jams, no choice really only one type of strawberry jams Hartley's. So I bought the jam it cost me£1.14p...
Now Hartley's is an ok brand of jam usually fairly good. Hartley's jam is now part of the large premier food brand and available in a lot of stores.
The jam I bought was their best their Best everyday jam .This jam comes in quite an attractive shaped jar. with a red strawberry designed label with the Hartleys logo and Best srawberry jam written on it. Hartley also make a family jam this is without pieces of fruit or seeds in it,
I prefer lots of real fruit pieces in mine. I was brought up near strawberry fields with a mother that made jam; nothing beats her home made strawberry jam full of whole strawberries. So I have been spoilt. I usually choose a jam that resembles mums. Hartley's jam is ok. But does not quite meet up with her standards or as good as some other jam's but it is adequate.
I got home, made a cup of tea warmed and buttered some scones I opened the screw top lid to the jam and spooned some onto my scone . The jam was a fairly good red colour with a few sort of fleshy strawberry bits in. No huge nearly whole strawberries though, It was a fairly thick jam.
I then but a dollop of double cream on top of the jam and ate the scone jam and cream. It was an ok ish sort of experience no way as good as a mums jam and clotted cream but ok.
The jam was as you might guess sweet it did taste of strawberries quite nice, not brilliant but quite nice fine for an everyday treat but not for something special. Hartley's jam is made with out artificial colours preservatives or flavourings.
Hartley's began making jam in 1871 but since then has sold out to premier foods. Apparently enough Hartley's jam to spread 300million pieces of toast is sold every year. Would I buy it again? Well………….. only if There is no choice of a better jam in the shop
Summary: An ok shop bought jam
