Heinz Baked Beans

There can be few people who haven’t heard of the Heinz brand. Founded in 1869 by the German, Henry Heinz in America. Heinz products are now sold worldwide. The company initially made horseradish followed by pickles and tomato ketchup. Heinz Beans first went on sale in the U.K in 1886. In the 1870’s Heinz also produced such delights as sauerkraut in crocks and noble catsup! These delights fortunately haven’t stood the test of time! In 1886 the beans were imported from Canada and were considered a luxury food. In 1901 a tin of beans would set you back £1.50 for a 1 lb tin! Heinz Baked Beanz in tomato sauce comprise the ‘umble baked bean - from the same family as lentils, Fabaceae (leguminosae) – try asking for that in the Co-op – and tangy-sweet tomato sauce. I have tried baked beans by other manufacturers but, in my opinion, none of them are as good to eat as the Heinz variety. There is something about the texture of the bean – firm yet not hard. Other beans I have found can be mushy. After all the rich food of Christmas I thought I would do a review about one of the more simple foods of life - but one that has the same eventual effect as your Christmas sprouts if you catch my drift! I always buy the original Heinz Baked Beans as opposed to the Weight Watchers variety as the calorie values aren't that different and the original beans taste so much nicer, and they come in a range of sizes too. I usually purchase the 200g size as I tend to eat them when I am cooking just for myself. This size currently retails in Tesco's for 41p or £1.21 fro a pack of three of this size. I wonder how many tins of baked beans (Heinz or other brands) are eaten in households throughout the world on a daily basis? Hazarding a guess, I'd say it must run into the millions. (If not billions!) And did you ever meet anyone who *DOESN'T* like baked beans? I've been racking my brain all day, and I can't come up with anybody of my close personal acquaintance! There is nothing more satisfying than eating baked beans on toast for breakfast, brunch or lunch (not on the same day obviously). I can remember days coming home from exams and my Mum would ask if I wanted beans on toast or when it was snowing and being served up a bowl of hot, steaming beans with chunks of freshly made bread and butter.
