Advantages: Fairly cheap, tasty, low calorie
Disadvantages: Looks horrible!
Chicken Noodle is usually one of my favourite soup flavours, so when I spotted the Heinz Chicken Noodle Soup while browsing the soup aisle in Tesco looking for something to have for lunch, I decided to give it a go. I am eating a lot of soup at the moment as I'm on a diet and it's a quick, healthy low-fat lunch option, so there might be a few more soup reviews to follow this.
This soup is part of Heinz' classic range, which also includes things like Leek and Potato, Cream of Tomato and Scotch Broth. They come in a red can, with a photograph of the soup on the front. The photo makes the soup look very appetising, showing a steaming bowl of soup full of noodles and garnished with fresh coriander.
This product can be heated in a pan on the hob or cooked for three minutes in the microwave, so it is definitely a quick lunch option. You are advised not to over-cook it as this may impair the flavour.
The soup tastes like a Chinese style soup, although the noodles taste more like normal Italian spaghetti than oriental style noodles. It is essentially a clear broth-style soup, containing small noodles and tiny pieces of chicken, sweetcorn, red pepper and onion. The flavour is good - it has a delicious spicy kick to it which I like, otherwise I might have been tempted to sprinkle some chilli flakes in to liven it up a bit. It does have a very thin, slightly watery consistency but the noodles add enough bulk for this not to matter too much, and I've had chicken noodle soups in Chinese restaurants which haven't been too dissimilar in consistency.
Overall, I was impressed with the taste of the soup, although I'm not entirely convinced it's going to keep me full until dinner time tonight! My first impressions were not that great as it doesn't look very attractive, but it definitely tastes better than it looks. The can suggests stirring in some fresh coriander, and I think that might well enhance the flavour still further.
The can I bought cost 81 pence from Tesco which I think represents very good value - it is a cheap lunch, and you can always serve it with some nice crusty bread to turn it into more of a meal.
Another benefit of this soup for those, like me, who are on a diet is that it is very low calorie. The entire 400g can only has 124 calories, and 1.2g of fat (only 0.2g of this is saturated fat). I'm not convinced by the recommended serving size on the can though - you'd starve if you only had half a can for lunch!
I enjoyed this soup and will definitely be buying it again. It's not the best canned soup I've tried as I much prefer the Heinz Big Soups which really do feel me up, but for a quick, cheap low-calorie lunch I think it is great.
Summary: A good budget lunch... I will definitely be buying it again
