Advantages: Very quick, very easy, warms you up nicely with big chunks of veg

Disadvantages: Quite watery flavour, high in salt

Poundland currently have selected Heinz soups (including oxtail and vegetable) on 2 for £1, so of course I bought a couple when there the other day. I like having soups in the house as they're perfect for "I'm really starving, want something NOW and there's nothing in, let alone something quick" moments, of which I've just had one. The tins are 400g, which I belief equates to two servings, but I'm a hungry hippo and eat a can to myself.

Okay - first up, ease of use. Open with a pull tab, so no hassles there, tip into saucepan and heat, pour into bowl. Then, taste. Well, despite being a Heinz classic, there's not all that much to it, the main taste is light tomato with vague hints of the other vegetables when you bite into them. The texture is nice, however, with big chunks of veg including potato, carrot, peas, swede, beans and onions. There's also small pasta tubes which are slimy in a good way. The vegetables are all soft and heat through nicely when cooked. On the taste issue, I actually tend to add strips of mature cheddar to my soup to add a bit of substance to it, and its nice when it melts... hm, there's a reason here I'm not still a size ten isn't there??

Right, health-wise this soup is not great, although it is made worse by the fact that I personally think you have to eat the whole tin to be full. The tin as a whole contains 2.6g of salt, that's nearly half your days allowance, eek...

So, my conclusion is that a Heinz soup is a perfect thing to have in the cupboard for filling and warming up, but the salt content means I won't be making too much of a habit of it, and if I'm going to consume that much salt I'd really like to be having more of a flavour punch.

Summary: Put some cheese it it, go on!

Tesco also have these soups at 50p at the moment (4 for £2).

eek that is salty - if good ingredients shouldn't need that much

Hmmm, most people I know wouldn't eat a full can in one go so I don't think the salt is -too- bad...
