Advantages: Generous with the ingredients and equal to most supermarket health eating ranges in the stats.

Disadvantages: Struggles against some of the more intensely flavoured super soups.

Heinz seems to be a brand that we inherently trust, a company that has never stretched itself to any great culinary heights, nor produced the best version of the foods that it sells, but nevertheless there is always a decent standard which its products rarely fall beneath.

Its soups have healed the nation back to good health over many winters, but recently they have faced competition on all sides, from more inexpensive supermarket own-brands to several wonderful and exotic tins and packets from chefs, foreign countries and from delicatessens.

At 60p - 80p per can Heinz should be considered fairly good value, as the more inexpensive versions can sometimes disappoint with thin, transparent liquid and few vegetables, and for the price of the dearer version it becomes more sensible to buy ingredients to make your own.

This vegetable soup could never be called miserly with the generous pieces of carrot, potato, peas, pasta, onion and beans; and their combined taste is fairly good considering their modest individual attributes. When slowly heated this will provide a snack that feels health conscious and reassuringly warming, but as a meal it might disappoint those who have grown to see soup as being something equal to a restaurant's main course in terms of the exciting, unusual and hearty ingredients often used.

Summary: If you want soup Heinz is a winner, if you want something special buy stew instead!
