Let me take you back with me to one of my childhood nights I must have been about 6 or 7. It was a Halloween night, for tea that night we had soup and toast Heinz soup in the early 60’s my mum bought nothing else. The flavour cream of Tomato, Heinz been making tomato soup for many a year. Since 1910 I just discovered. First it was imported from Belguim then as it was difficult to import things from abroad in the war a factory was built in England in 1930.

Now as the nights were getting darker this October 31st we sat round the roaring open wood fire with our bowls of soup and some hot buttered toast.

My dear sister older than I said, Mary don’t you think this soup looks like red blood? I dipped my spoon into my red cream of tomato soup; it was a thick soup I stirred my spoon round the bowl, a bit too creamy to look really like blood. I said "yes your blood when the vampire sucks it out". Loving sisters we were.
Dad said stop that and eat your soup, to mother he said why did you serve tomato soup tonight dear. Mother gathered her thick black shawl around her and cackled her wicked laugh. Come on children eat your blood opps sorry soup its good for you. Hurry up it’s nearly bed time. So we sat by the fire my sister and me, my mum and dad and the big black cat called puss.

It was a quiet night as it was in the age before we all had TV 1959 it was. So I slurped a spoonful of soup it was delicious smooth creamy and tangy a rich deep tomato taste. As we sat in the quiet eating our soup I heard a tip tapping at the window, a scritch scritch scratching, shivers ran down my spine. So I slurped some more soup I was not scared, the soup was good it warmed my cockles? Well that’s me old mam used to say.
As I supped the next spoonful of soup, I heard the wind whistle down the chimney, goose bumps rose on my neck so I supped some more soup to keep the evil spirit thoughts away. This soup was really creamy and tangy. The clock struck eight hurry up dad said it’s nearly time for bed.
I did not relish the thought of going to bed so I slowly ate my soup lingering over every spoonful mm it was delicious soup worth lingering over anyway , I scrapped the last drop of the side of the bowl .
Mum said come on time to go to bed. I felt brave my tummy full of warm nourishing soup. I dared to rush to the outside lav. ignoring the dark shapes and shadows that hide round the corner ready to jump out and catch me. I sang “ghosts and goulies you’re not going to get me” all the way back from the lav to the house it made me feel brave.

I brushed my teeth put my winceyette pyjamas on and snuggled into bed, I found it difficult to sleep listening to the trees scritch scratching on the windows and remembering what my sister had said about eating a bowl of red blood . I went to sleep that night as I heard a whoo wooo was it a ghost, or just an owl.



Heinz soup is still the same recipe that it was in my childhood, it has no additives, no artuficial colours , no preservatives , or GM ingredients. contains lots of tomatoes 84%, some herbs and spices enhance the tomato flavour, This soup not recommended for those with a dairy intolerance as it contains milk. This soup contains 1.46g the daily recommended amount of salt the daily recommended amount is 6 g. 100g of soup has 57 calories.

The 400g tin is not really quite enough for 2 people but more than enough for 1, I guess it would be enough for 2 small children. You can store this soup opened in the fridge for 2 days

Tesco sell Heinz cream of tomato soup at 97p for a 800g can, 59p for 400g packs of 4 for £ 2,26 on 2 for 1 offer £3.00, a 300g can for 47p
