Advantages: Tasty, delicious, warming, cheap .

Disadvantages: Not a lot!

I love tomatoes, so it should come as no surprise that I also love this totally gorgeous tomato soup from Heinz. It could be said that I was reared on it, as the kitchen cupboard at home when I was a nipper would never be short of a few tins of this delectable liquid.

The only soup that ever had it beat for taste and flavour was my late mothers home made vegetable and lentil, and since it doesn't come in cans, and as the recipe died with her, it has been lost to posterity (and me, unfortunately!) forever.

My taste for Heinz Cream of Tomato Soup (to give it it's official title) seems to have been passed on through the generations, as my own teenage daughter also adores it, (is it in the genes?) and there is many an argument in the kitchen as to who has the bigger portion when this soup is bubbling away on the cooker!

It's a special favourite of mine during the winter months. A piping hot portion goes into a wee vacuum flask and into my golf bag, and I can think of nothing better to warm up the old body and restore the flagging spirits, than a large helping of tomato soup halfway through my round on a bleak, dour, wet and miserable winter's morning on the links. (Well, since I gave up the old whisky!)

So why is it so tasty, and why is it better (in my opinion) than all the other varieties that are available on the supermarket shelves? Well, if I knew the definitive answer to that question, or rather if Heinz's competitors in the soup market knew it, then it wouldn't be the best, now would it? But I think a large part of its success is down to the fact that it consists of 74% tomatoes. That's right folks! Three quarters of this soup is actually made up of what it says on the tin!

There's really not a lot more to say. It's creamy, thick, and slips down the old throat like silk, leaving you feeling full and satisfied. I often make myself a plate of this soup if I'm feeling lazy, and can't be bothered cooking a full meal. I get myself a large, fresh Vienna bread roll, a slab of 'real' butter, heat up my soup, (I prefer the cooker to the microwave, as I think it heats through more thoroughly) butter my bread, and voila. An instant meal, designed to satisfy the largest appetite. I dip the bread into the soup myself, but I don't think this is mandatory!

I've tried other tomato soups on occasion, but to be honest, none of them measure up to Heinz, and seem to be more watery and less nourishing. (Although I do like Campbell's Mediterranean Tomato, but that's another opinion)

It's not expensive. You can buy it almost anywhere they sell groceries, and it comes in small, medium, and family sized (large) tins. A new innovation is a plastic tub, with a flip off lid, but thankfully the soup still tastes as good. Prices vary depending on where you buy it.

I can't tell you whether or not you'll like it, but if you like tomatoes, it's a good bet you'll also like this soup.

I have often added a little milk, this makes it taste creamier, and goes that little further too. Nicola x
