Advantages: Counts towards a portion of fruit/veg,

Disadvantages: Price

After perusing my cupboard for something a little different for lunch, my eye was drawn towards the ever ready supply of tinned food which is stock piled just in case a disaster were to occur overnight rendering the roads blocked and shops declared a no go zone.

I finally decided upon a tin of Heinz tomato soup and thought that this would also count towards my five a day fruit and veg requirement for a healthy lifestyle. The tin is easily recognisable as a quality item with the red and black branding of 'Heinz' and '57' which symbolizes the number of varieties which it produced. (mmm now there's an idea for another 56 reviews). The label also provides the nutritional values along with cooking guidelines; in a nutshell you can either put it in a pan and cook it or put it in the microwave.

The soup comes in a fully recyclable aluminium can and has one of those really useful ring pull openings. A little care is needed however as you peel back the lid, because at the very last second the lid can spring back, covering you in a soupy spray; particularly bad with tomato soup because its hard to get off clothing and can stain.

The contents pour into the pan/bowl with a satisfying rich orangey red coloured consistency giving the finished texture a smooth creamy finish. There was no separation within the soup and no watery elements to it, which made the taste absolutely superior to any of the lesser quality brands. I know some people add salt & pepper to flavour their food, however it seems such a shame to spoil such a well rounded soup.

As an added touch, I like to dunk buttered fresh bread into mine which always keeps me full up until tea time.

A 400g can of soup costs around 80p; a more cost effective method is to buy a 4 pack which costs around £2.60 in Tesco.
