Advantages: Warming, filling and tasty

Disadvantages: Could have lower sugar and fat contents

Well, with the cold winter nights fast approaching us again (did they ever actually leave us!?) its time to stock my kitchen cupboards with warming, tasty treats, perfect for those cold, dark nights, and for me there is nothing more warming than a lovely hot bowl of Heinz Cream of Tomato Soup.

~The Soup Itself~
I have heard many people nowadays say this product isn't as good as it used to be, but as a child I was never keen on soups, so I really can't comment on if this is true or not. However, I can comment on what I think of this soup nowadays and i'm a big fan of it.

Heinz Cream of Tomato soup is exactly what it says on the tin. It is a tomato flavoured soup with a subtle but tasty hint of cream added to it. The cream really adds a nice flavour to this soup but it in no way makes it taste sickly or fattening.

The consistency of this soup is really smooth and thick. It contains no 'bits' as I don't know about you but my 6 year old son has a thing about 'bits in his food and is far happier with a smooth soup such as this one.

I really like the tomatoey flavour to this soup. The flavour really comes through well and doesn't in any way taste artificial to me. Nor is it too strong or bitter though either. I believe the cream probably works well with the tomato to take away that 'tangy' taste you can get with tomatos.

~Instructions for use~
I'm sure you all know how to cook soup, its hardly rocket science is it! However, just in case then here goes. You can either cook this soup in the microwave or on the hob. Simply empty the contents of the tin into a saucepan (if using on the hob) or a microwavable bowl if warming up in the microwave.

To cook in the microwave you need to warm the soup through for a minute (if you have an 850w microwave), stir the contents, then heat again for another minute to ensure that the soup is heated the whole way through. Warming times may vary depending on the strength of your microwave. The soup should then be piping hot to serve.

For warming though on the hob, the soup should again only take a couple of minutes or so to warm completely through. Stir regularly throughout but do not over-heat as this may affect the flavour of the soup!

~Ingredients~
Tomatos (84%), water, vegetable oil, sugar, modified cornflour, salt, dried skimmed milk, milk proteins, cream, spice extracts, herb extract, citric acid.

~Nutritional Information per 300g can~
Protein - 2.7g
Carbohydrates - 20.2g
Sugars - 14.9g
Fat - 8.9g
Fibre - 1.2g

Obviously the sugar and fat contents aren't great reading but that is if you use a whole can at once. The packaging actually states that this soup is low in fat and sugar and contains just 171 calories per serving.

It is suitable for vegetarians, and is suitable for anyone using a gluten free diet. This soup also contains no artifical colours, preservatives or flavours.

~Price/Packaging~
Heinz Cream of Tomato Soup tins are available in a few different sizes - 300g, 400g (standard size), and 800g. a 300G (mug size) can will cost you 60p per can, a 400g can will cost you 82p per can or you can get 4x cans for £2.60. An 800g can of this soup will set you back £1.24 per can.

You can sometimes get the 4 packs of soup on offer for £2.00 as they are at present. The above prices are current prices from Tescos superstores.

The packaging is instantly recognisable on the shelves. You can't fail to recognise the famous Heinz logo imprinted on the bright red background. The same logo which has been on our shelves since this soup was first introduced on the market in 1910.

~Other varieties~
Heinz soups are also available in other flavours such as:-
Cream of Chicken
Vegetable
Oxtail
Cream of Mushroom
Lentil
Mulligatawny
Minestrone
Potato and Leek
Scotch Broth
Chicken Noodle
Spring Vegetable

The list is actually endless, but the above gives a good indication of the majority of soups available in this range. Heinz have also branched out and now do soups in their organic range, soups of the world range, and big soups (which contain big chunks of vegetables etc).

~Summary~
I love this soup and find it perfect for a dinnertime snack on a cold winters day. Its warming, filling and is really tasty too. It couldn't be easier to cook and serve and with a few croutons and a bit of crusty bread and butter on the side, this snack is one of the tastiest around.

A real convenience snack that will leave you feeling warm and full all afternoon. Its made me hungry now just thinking about it! A highly recommended dinnertime treat to beat the winter blues!

Summary: The can states 'the original and the best' - says it all really!
