Advantages: creamy, thick, tasty and a quick meal
Disadvantages: slightly expensive at 89p a tin compared to the supermarket own brand price of around 49p a tin
Some nights I just can't be bothered to cook! And as the winter months start to creep in I really start to crave tomato soup on the cold nights that I get home late from work. Its the best in simple cooking - just needing a good quality bread roll to go alongside.
I'm a massive fan of soup and tomato soup is my favourite comfort food. I never buy anything other than Heinz as I have found that other brands - even the decent quality ones - either have a slightly different flavour that is not quite right, or they are nowhere near as thick and smooth.
From opening the tin to serving, these are the things that I love about Heinz tomato soup:
The tin generally has a ring pull. Making life so much easier to get the lid off. I would buy a tin for this alone as I am not a fan of tin openers (lazy I know)
On opening, a lovely tomato smell hits you, and when pouring the soup into a bowl or saucepan to heat, it has a rich, thick texture. The soup is the thickness that a good comfort soup should be - about the consistency of a white sauce.
I usually microwave my soup, and it generally take around 3 minutes with a stir in the middle. It heats really well right through and I have noticed no taste difference if heating on the hob.
On serving it has lost little of it's thickness. The taste is as tomato-ey and creamy as you would expect from the small and consistency, and has no strange aftertastes. Bread soaks it up nicely and a standard sized tin is enough to make an evening meal for one person.
It wouldn't even cross my mind to buy a different brand, even with the current price around 89p. This is a cheapish indulgence that I'll happily pay for.
Summary: A little luxury that is worth it

- 12/11/09 What I do is get a tin of soup, poach an egg in it, and serve that with a pork pie sausage roll. |
