Advantages: Basic, and best
Disadvantages: None
Now, over the past months I've written the odd soup review of wild and wonderful concoctions that Heinz have come up with. But here comes the basic one, but arguably the daddy of them all; Heinz Cream of Tomato Soup.
It's as simple as that. Kind of. Many basic store-brand tomato soups are watery and lack any remnants of flavour. Heinz's version however can happily lay claim to being able to do just that. The vibrant red soup from the famous Heinz Classic red tin is full of flavour. Being simply tomato flavour you can't expect much else, but it's also well seasoned and satisfies the palate - yes, Heinz do one with a 'hint' of basil, but that's probably just an excuse to charge slightly more for a tin of soup. Here though the taste is something I associate with my childhood and having it when suffering with a cold, or simply when my mum was clearing out the stock cupboard!!
For those with the culinary prowess of the pebble, all you need to do is heat this in a bowl in the microwave for three minutes, giving it a stir halfway through, or put it on the hob for a bit longer, making sure it doesn't boil as it could burn some of the soup and spoil the flavour.
Here's the ingredients list:
Tomatoes (84%), Water, Vegetable Oil, Sugar, Modified Cornflour, Salt, Dried Skimmed Milk, Milk Proteins, Cream, Spice Extracts, Herb Extract, Citric Acid.
It's suitable for vegetarians, but those who are lactose intolerant, please note it contains a small bit of milk. The average can will also set you back 226 calories per tin...they recommend that just 200 grams is one portion but I beg to differ!
It's currently in amongst the 4 for £2 offer in Sainsburys, but will usually cost around the 80p mark. So if you want a good old-fashioned soup that's not spoiled with various attempts at adding as many flavours as possible, then this is for you. Bread and butter is optional, but also recommended!!
Summary: A good old favourite from Heinz
