Advantages: None
Disadvantages: It tastes like old leftover mayonnise
Hellmann's Extra Light Mayonnaise is SUPPOSEDLY the healthier alternative. But I have a theory which will disprove the sneaky marketing campaign that claims to save your waistline whilst allowing you to enjoy the deliciousness that is Hellmanns.
Let's look at the facts:
This version of the deliciousness known as Hellmann's mayonnaise contains half the fat (only 3%) of the original Hellmanns. It also contains only half the calories. But what they DON'T tell you is that is that they have excluded one of the VITAL ingredients. The delicious taste. That's right- where's the taste?
This version is thin and there's SOMETHING WRONG WITH IT! Read other reviews on here and was shocked- true mayo lovers do not be fooled by what they say, it isn't true! Hellmann's Extra Light is not as tasty and delicious as the original.
The consistency of it is poorer, the colour is more transparent and it has a weird sweetness that is sickening. The fact that free range hens laid the eggs that went into making this, is poor consolation. I'm sure the hens would have hated to know that they were allowed to roam free and have a nice life, laid a few eggs- and the eggs were used in something so gross. I tried this stuff from two jars just to be sure it wasn't one bad batch. It wasn't.
I love mayonnaise and I put on sandwiches and eat it with chips...jacket potatoes and roast chicken...or fried chicken...*drools* oh yeah, that's the stuff! But how can I enjoy those things when they are covered in THIS? I tried the Light with all of the above and nothing tasted as good.
Aside from the horrible texture and weird sweetness its nothing like mayonnaise ought to be.
They SAY it will save your waistline - and I thought I would save my waistline by trying a lighter version - after having a jar of this I always resort to DOUBLE the amount of normal mayonnaise just to remove the awful taste of the light!
A 400g jar cost me £1.80 - well, there's £1.80 I'll never see again. The original may be calorie-laden, sure, but at least its WORTH the calories.
If you don't believe me- and let's face it, why would you, I sound like a crazy person, then you can buy this from most supermarkets.
Summary: Dont buy it. Trust me.

- 29/08/09 I picked up a couple of these but in plastic bottles, Tecso were doing £1 each so I thought it worth a go. I only ever it in my mix with tuna and onions so haven't really noticed the difference. Decent review though :) |

- 21/07/09 Are you reviewing the 'Light' version or 'Extra Light'? You kept referring to it as light although you've reviewed it under the extra light section.
I think that Light is ok, though nowhere near as nice as the original, but that Extra Light is awful. |
