Advantages: Quite nice(ish)

Disadvantages: The taste of peanut butter isn't really there

I've never eaten much peanut butter, it's one of those foods I enjoy but as I'm the only one who eats it I don't like to buy a full jar as no way could I eat it all to myself and I wouldn't want to waste it. To get the flavour I'll buy myself a pack of Hershey's Cups from Morrisons, but yesterday in Sainsburys I spotted a grungy looking orange packet claiming to be Hershey's Reese's Pieces. Or peanut butter-filled M&Ms to you and me.

I was looking forward to them all day but didn't get to try them until the evening, by then I'd worked my tastebuds into a frenzy of anticipation as I imagined the smooth salty peanut butter inside a crispy sugar shell.

My tastebuds were disappointed. People rave about these, but I couldn't see what all the fuss was about. The main problem is the fact that the sweets are the same size as M&Ms, which is too small really for the flavour of the peanut butter to come through. It works with a Hershey's Cup as they are so much bigger but there is barely enough peanut butter in each 'Piece' for you to be able to taste it.

The problem then is that there is nothing else added to the sweets to give them any other flavour, either to compliment the peanut butter or to detract from it. You've got the sweet hollow sugariness of the shell but that pretty much disappears as soon as you've sucked or crunched the sweet, then you'll find you're left with a sticky paste of what is obviously peanut butter - only without the rich flavour.

Maybe I'm being a bit unfair. The taste of peanut butter is definitely there in these sweets, it's just much more subtle than I'd like and they go no way towards dealing with a craving for the sticky stuff. They don't look great either, whereas M&Ms are brightly coloured these are a mix of beige and brown sweets which honestly don't look half as good when tipped into a bowl!

They're sweet, slightly greasy tasting and quite nice in a not-what-they're-supposed-to-be kinda way. I won't buy them again though as I love 'ordinary' M&Ms and I love Hershey's Cups so there isn't really any reason for me to add these to my long list of weekend munchies.

55p from Sainsburys.

Summary: Not for me, although I'm sure plenty of people will love them
