Advantages: Very versatile, nice taste

Disadvantages: Quite expensive unless on offer

Herta Frankfurters is such a brilliant name non? Based on the classic German frankfurter this product is available in Asda atm for a pack of 10 at only 1.00. I found myself looking for something new to add to my pasta and the result was this.

On first glance they're not exactly the healthiest product around with each frankfurter containing 98 calories and of course the ingredients are also questionable. 74% of the frankfurter is actually pork whilst the rest seems to be made up of water and pork fat.

Ignoring those facts aside I think this is a very conveniant and also extremely tasty product. They're available in packs of 4 or 10 and there is also a chicken alternative available as well as a much larger frankfurter which could be used in hot dogs for instance. The packaging is bright and attractive and fairly sumple showing a picture of the frankfurters on the front and the slogan 'everyone loves 'em!' The back of the packet lists various cooking information and nutrition statistics as well as highlighting just how versatile the product is.

You can cook them either by microwave, grill, simmering or frying and each result takes about 4 minutes or so makinjg them very quick to prepare. There's also various suggestions on how to use them whether its just with chips or on a pizza even in a salad or my own personal favourites - combined with a home made pasta sauce and pasta itself.

When you actually open the packet the sausages are lined up in a row and the smoky smell immediately hits your senses. Each sausage is probably a bit longer than a standard 15cm ruler and isn't very thick however the moment they touch your taste buds the flavour kicks in. They have a rather soft and rubbery texture due to the skin but the meat itself is wonderful and you can find yourself eating an entire packet in a few seconds sometimes! They're not smoked too much meaning that the blend of flavours is just right to give you the best taste possible.

Whilst some people may argue that the product is too processed you can easily balance that out by dicing them and having them in a salad. They give a variety of dishes an extra flavour without overpowering the rest of the meal. They're a wonderful idea especially for children though are probably best tracking down when they're on offer as they can be quite expensive normally compared to just a normal tin of hot dogs. You can't really open a pack and leave some of the frankfurters for more than a couple of days but you are able to freeze them if needed.

Whilst Herta Frankfurters might not seem like your first stop when food shopping they are quick to prepare, very versatile and extremely tasty so I very much recommend giving them a try.

Summary: A nice little top up for a variety of dishes

I do like frankfurters but I worry what's in them. What do they actually mean when they say `pork'. Pigs ears anybody??? Nice review though.

Never been a fan of either hot dogs or frankfurters. Pork and apple sausages? Another matter entirely...
