Advantages: Lovely tasty, meaty soup.

Disadvantages: Not a lot! (Unless you're vegetarian!)

Heinz are great, aren't they, especially their soup range. It just goes to show that *SOME* good things come out of America, as it was a 25-year-old American called Henry John Heinz who started up this now multi-national giant of a corporation way back in 1868.

I was reared on Heinz products, (amongst other things) and one of my favourites was always Heinz Oxtail Soup. (As well as their delicious baked beans) It has a really strong flavour of meat, or more specifically oxtail (surprise, surprise) and is just perfect for a confirmed carnivore like myself. In fact, when I'm sharing a tin of this soup with somebody else I always try to ensure I get the last portion out of the pot, as this always has all the lovely wee tasty bits of meat which have settled to the bottom. (Luvverly!)

But that isn't all the flavours you'll experience. There's also a flavouring of tomatoes and onions, a wee sensation of garlic, and a dash of red wine thrown in for good measure, which all blend together perfectly to literally explode onto your taste buds.

When I lived in my home country of Scotland, this was always a favourite soup to take out with me in a vacuum flask when I was playing a round of golf on one of these sub-zero temperature mornings during a typical Scottish winter. Crack open the oxtail soup after the first nine holes, and you were immediately refreshed, fortified, and warmed right down to your wee tootsies to cope with the second half of the round.

Unfortunately I don't get the chance to savour this lovely soup very much in my adopted country of Ireland. This soup is currently *BANNED* in the Republic of Ireland, and the only chance I get to purchase it is when I'm home on a trip to Scotland, or when we take a family trip over the border to the North of Ireland (the British bit) to Newry in County Down. This happened as a result of the outbreak of "mad cow disease" in the UK a few years back, when the Republic got all panicky and clamped a ban on British produced meat. (To this day all meat on sale in Ireland must have the farm of origin stamped on the packaging.) So I stock up whenever I get the chance, although it never seems to last very long. (Bah!!)

Heinz Oxtail Soup generally comes in a 400g can, with a ring pull on the top. You can heat it up either in a saucepan (my preferred method) or microwave oven if you want it faster and simply can't wait to titillate those old taste buds. A tin will serve two people comfortably, and even three if you water it down a wee bit. (Sacrilege!)

Cost, if memory serves me correctly, is around the 60 pence per tin mark. (Anyways, it isn't expensive)

Highly recommended if you love your meat. (As I do) If you're a vegetarian then obviously you'll hate it!
