Advantages: Tastes nice

Disadvantages: High in salt

Henry John Heinz founded his legendary food company in 1868 with, of all things, horseradish sauce. In 1910, Heinz Tomato Soup made its debut and twenty years later, Oxtail Soup was launched. Nowaday, Heinz sell 289 million cans of soup a year in the UK alone.

Heinz Oxtail Soup comes in their trademark red label tins with a handy ring pull lid. It is available in two sizes - 300g and 400g.

In appearance, Oxtail Soup looks a lot like gravy. Nice gravy, the sort your mum makes with all the crusty bits from the bottom of the roasting tin, but gravy nonetheless. It has a slight oily sheen to it and is medium brown in colour.

When you take a sip, the texture is fairly smooth, slightly oily with a few small, grainy lumps of meat and carrot. The flavour, again, is of a good quality gravy - nice and beefy. There is also a hint of spicyness.

Oxtail Soup is simplicity itself to prepare. Simply open the tin, pour into a saucepan and heat gently until it starts to steam. Do not bring to the boil as this will change the flavour of the soup. It is best served with crusty buttered bread on a chilly day with rain lashing against the window. Lovely! A 400g can serves two chilren or one hungry adult (we're gluttons in our house!).

The soup has just 37 calories per 100 grams and contains less than 5% fat, so is a surprisingly healthy option. It is fairly high in salt, though and also contains gluten, so those with high blood pressure and delicate tummies should probably watch out.

Oxtail Soup is available in all supermarkets and most convenience shops and is priced at around 60p for a 400g tin.

Summary: Definitely worth it as a convenience food
