Wandering round Aldi the other day I spotted a brown box in the cake section that I'd not noticed before. Looking at the box I remembered I'd read favourable reviews of these Toffee Bakewells on here and decided to take a box home for after tea. Cutting a long story short, they didn't make it until teatime. The kids came home from school starving so we dug into the cakes. The first thing I noticed was the delicious smell of toffee. These small cakes have a smell that is predominently toffee with a sweet underlying smell of fudge. Good enough to eat, in fact! Having a both a boyfriend and a son with a sweet tooth, I am always looking for treats to fill their sugary desires, so the last time I was in Aldi, I was in no hesitation in purchasing this variation on the classic Bakewell Tarts. -=What are they?=- These tarts are based on Bakewells Tarts (pastry case, almond flavoured sponge, plain icing and a cherry on the top), but instead of being the aforementioned combination they are toffee flavoured! I have recently found a wonderful alternative to Mr. Kipling cakes, at a fraction of the price. We found these delights in Aldi?s a few weeks ago, priced at 69p. They are a variation on Mr. Kiplings Cherry Bakewells, which I don't like as I can't bear the white icing. The tarts are made up of small pastry cases, filled with a toffee flavoured sponge cake and toffee filling, topped with toffee flavoured fondant icing and caramel flavoured fudge pieces.
