Advantages: Wonderful fruity taste, easy to make, can even use the cheaper drinks!
Disadvantages: You may not even realise its alcoholic with the final taste!
The weathers getting better, summers slowly but surely coming. They even say that it will be the hottest summer we've had. So why not get the loungers ready and prepare yourself to take in the delights of a Sex on the Beach sip by sip in the sun!
Sex On The Beach:
Sex on the Beach is a fruity, and very popular cocktail for the summer. Usually orange and yellow in colour with additions of reds and pinks. Then with a garnish it just looks like summer in a glass.
There are many different recipes on how to make the 'perfect' Sex on the Beach, some completely contrasting others. Some with vodka and peach schnapps, topped with different juices like orange juice, pineapple juice, cranberry juice and even apple juice. Some use the liquor Midori with a different mixture of juices. Everyone has their own preferred recipe, but the following is what I personally use.
The ingredients I use for this cocktail are:
Vodka
Peach Schnapps
Orange Juice
Pineapple Juice
Grenadine
Ice Cubes
I always start by half filling my glass with ice cubes. You may go to a bar and many people might ask it without ice so they can get more drink for their money. This is a bad idea however. While some people see it as a scam just to fill the glass with ice, its actually to make sure the drink maintains its cold temperature. If you've ever tried a warm cocktail, its never as great as the ice cold real deal.
When filling your glass halfway with ice, its upto you what glass you use. Usually I will use a highball glass, but depending on who the drink may be for or the atmosphere, I may even use a jug! Why not if its party time in summer!
I start off with the alcohol. I personally simultaneously pour the vodka and peach schnapps together into the glass. Now rather than saying how many ml's or ounces, I will describe it in 'parts'. This is so if you do decide on using a bigger or smaller glass you can work out roughly how much you need. I highly reccommend getting speed pourer for your bottles however, as this will make sure each bottle is giving an even flow.
When pouring the alcohol, I pour 2 parts vodka to 1 part peach schnapps. The vodka doesnt have to be a top vodka being its use in a cocktail. I usually go for the £10-12 bottles of vodka, being mainly Smirnoff. I have even used a must cheaper and unbranded bottle, and although it wasnt the smoothest drink to taste, it still came out delightfully. It simply depends on your price limits. A good peach schnapps is the well known Archers, but once again, I regularly use Tesco Discount Brand peach schnapps. Ive never found a problem with this, and at half the price, its a nice cheap drink to make for you, family and friends.
Next I start with the juice. I find it doesnt really matter what order you pour these in. As I say this however, I always seem to be finding myself pour the pineapple juice first. I will pour in about 3 parts pineapple juice, followed by about 2-3 parts orange juice. Any juices are fine. Theres no need for any top brands for this drink, but I must add that its best not to go for a 'bitty' juice and always look for the smooth ones.
By now, thats your alcohol and juices put together with the ice. The colour should be orangey yellow. It looks fruity enough, but I find it need one more thing. At this point a lot of people add cranberry juice, with then turns the whole thing pinky-red. I dont quite like the taste of this personally. I dont feel it has that finishing touch for summer. This is where I add the final ingredient.
The last thing is Grenadine. Not many people are familiar with this and seem to think its an alcohol at first. Its acutally non-alcoholic. Its a sweet, red syrup made from pomegranites. Although its made from pomegranites a lot of people say it tastes of cherry or raspberry. It is also very cheap, at around £3 for a 70cl bottle in most supermarkets.
When adding the grenadine, slowly pour a small amount, I usually pour along the side of the glass on top of the ice, but only a dash is needed to add as it is quite thick and could otherwise overpower the drink. As it is a syrup, it is a lot heavier and therefore sinks to the bottle of the glass.
Finally, I add a straw to the drink, and give it a small but quick stir, maybe one or two quick revolutions and its done. The red syrup of grenadine is then mixed along with the alcohol and juices with a beautiful colour ranging in reds, oranges and yellow.
Thats the Sex on the Beach finished. To summerize, the basics are:
Half fill a glass with ice.
Add 2 parts vodka and 1 part peach schnapps
Add 3 parts pineapple juice and 2-3 parts orange juice
Add a dash of grenadine
Add your straw and with a quick swirl its complete.
The perfect drink for the summer!
And to finish on that, its always nice to produce your cocktail with a small bit of flair. Why not practice throwing a bottle behind your back and catching it on the back of your hand. Maybe throw the ice in the air and catch them behind your back in your glass. I do warn you though, practice makes perfect, and never try it first time! Who wants to amuse their friends with a broken bottle and liquor all over their mates!
Enjoy this refreshing taste!
Summary: Sit back this summer, relax, and slurp away with this beautifully tasting cocktail.
