For several months now, I have been creating various cocktails whilst filling my drinks cupboard with all manner of liqueurs and spirits. By far my favourite kind of cocktail is the type that contains milk. They are virtually alcoholic milkshakes, and very tasty ones at that! It also gives you the added benefit of having a long drink, which lasts longer but one that is also pretty potent (depending on how much alcohol you put in).

I began a personal quest to find out how much alcohol you can put into a milkshake before it doesn't taste very good any more. In the process, I created the following concoctions and I think I also found the limit, although this will be subject to further investigations!

The main ingredients are milk, ice cream and alcohol. You can also add double cream for extra luxury, whipped cream just to make it even more interesting and crumbled chocolate flake to make a ‘super deluxe’ version. Alcohol can be anything you have in your cupboard, although I wouldn’t recommend anything acidic, as it will probably curdle the milk and/or cream. (I had a Baileys/Archers shooter the other day in a bar and it began to congeal. I wasn’t happy as it was supposed to be made up of Baileys/Butterscotch liqueur, which not only doesn’t curdle, but also tastes a lot nicer!)

Specifically, I have used Baileys, Dooleys and Vodka. In the future I plan to try and substitute the Baileys for Carolans (which isn’t as creamy, but it is much cheaper) and the vodka for Tia Maria, Frangelico, Malibu or anything else I fancy trying out.

~* The Tame Concoction – Serves 2 *~

4 medium sized scoops of Haagen-Dazs Belgian chocolate ice cream (I haven’t tried this with other chocolate ice creams, but it should work just as well, you might need a little more if it if the ice cream isn’t very chocolaty)
4 shots of Baileys (100ml)
2
shots of vodka (50ml – I used cheap, white label vodka which worked well, but any vodka will do)
Milk, perhaps a few hundred millilitres so that the liquid fills two glasses that hold approximately 330ml of liquid each.
Double cream (luxurious optional extra)
Whipped cream and crushed flake to top (again, optional)

Put the ice cream and the alcohol into a jug with a measure on it and used a hand blender to blend the contents until it is as smooth as possible. Add the milk and blend again, trying not to get the mixture over the units and ceiling etc. If you want to make the cocktail even creamier, add a slog of cream (perhaps 2 table spoons worth) and blend in.

Decant into two glasses and if you want to create the ‘Super Deluxe’ version, spray a layer of whipped cream on the top and cover with sprinkles of crushed flake (or cocoa powder).

The result was a wonderfully luxurious, creamy milkshake, which was chocolaty but not overpoweringly so. The bits of dark chocolate (fudge) sink as it settles so it needs a mix occasionally. I think this adds an interesting twist to the drink, but if you don’t like bits in your drinks, try using a different ice cream, or don’t mix it up. If you do use another brand please let me know what the results were like!

As it stands, this drink is very Moorish, and has lead to me having cravings for the stuff… not good! So, from now it will carry a health warning. WARNING: THIS DRINK WILL SERIOUSLY TANTILISE YOUR TASTEBUDS!

~* The Potent Concotion – Serves 2 *~

Exactly the same as the ‘Tame Concoction’ but using 3 or 4 shots of Vodka (75 – 100ml) and the standard 4 shots of Baileys (100 ml). This makes it pretty potent!

~* The Crazy Concoction – Serves 2 *~

4 good scoops of Häagen Dazs Belgian Chocolate ice cream (or similar)
3 shots of Baileys (75ml)
3 shots of Dooleys (75ml)

3 shots of Vodka (75ml)

Make as before.

This is extremely potent and to be honest, I don’t like it as much as my other concoctions. For me, the taste of the alcohol overpowered the creaminess and it lost some of it’s luxury appeal. Perhaps next time I will leave out the vodka and add more Dooleys or Baileys thus adding more creaminess to it.

As and when I try out other combinations, I will share them with you here. Enjoy!
