Advantages: Beautfully smooth chocolate egg, with extra yummy bits
Disadvantages: only available at easter
First of all, apologies for the odd timing of this particular review, I meant to get it done much much sooner than this, but actually, I ended up getting quite a lot of chocolate for Easter, so it's taken me some times to make it through it all!
For those that are unfamiliar with Hotel Chocolat, they are a chocolatier and cocoa growing company that have various shops and a mail order website that delivers to most of Europe. They specialise in luxury chocolate and are the originators of the world famous 'chocolate tasting club'.
So what better time to exercise their skill that Easter? They offer a range of eggs for different tastes, including some plainer eggs, some tiny ones for smaller appetites or purses and their range of stuffed eggs (which come in standard and enormous sizes) of which the 'Rocky Road to Caramellow' egg is one. At around £15 its a lot of an egg, but this isnt a plastic boxed, tinfoil wrapped, delicate shelled cheapo, this is a serious egg!
This egg has been on my favourites list for Easter for a number of years and I usually treat myself to one, this year I was treated instead by family, so it was extra yummy!
The egg itself is about the same size as one of the standard Cadbury's eggs, only about 4 times thicker. You really have to get a good grip on it to break a piece off...or smash it with a wine bottle...that also works. One side is caramel infused (flavour, not gooeyness) smooth milk chocolate, and the other half shell is their standard milk chocolate that has biscuit, chocolate buttons, caramel and crispy bits embedded in it. The whole thing also includes six of the company's very yummy handmade chocolates. The rocky road side of the egg is my favourite, it seems a lot more moreish and the carramellow side while smooth doesn't really taste all *that* much of caramel, it just seems to make the chocolate richer and a bit sweeter, which is really only a good thing as far as I'm concerned.
I'm not exaggerating when I say that the chocolate these guys produce is some of the richest, smoothest and purest melt-in-the-mouth chocolate I have tried, to have it wrapped in an egg shaped package is only cuter and more justifiable (since you just have to get into the festival spirit right?)
Honestly though, I thought that last year my egg was bigger. I really hope that my favourite indulgence company is not trying the old 'shrink it and charge the same price' trick. I couldn't be sure though, will just have to try it next year...just to check.
Summary: treat yourself or someone dear next year! you wont regret it
