Advantages: A very soft white sliced loaf

Disadvantages: None

My favourite bread is a locally baked bread by 'Roberts Bakery' . It is a beautifully soft white bread which all the family love. Unfortunately, the price of the bread is about £1.25p. When I buy up to 10 loaves a week this can prove expensive...so I am always on the 'look out' for a decent bread that might be a wee bit cheaper....

I have, at last, discovered a bread that is comparable - if not superior - to Roberts' bread.. ... It is Hovis' 'Soft White' bread. Although it is about the same price as Roberts' bread it can often be found on offer in the supermarkets. For example, this week it is on offer at Somerfield - 2 for £2. When the bread is on offer I buy it and freeze it. The bread comes in very eye catching orange and white packaging... .It is available as Medium, Thick and Extra Thick.

So, why do I choose Hovis' soft white? Basically, because it is 'as described' ... it's extremely soft and it is white. Although, I personally prefer brown and wholemeal bread, I am afraid that most of my family don't....

The bread stays very soft for several days and the medium bread makes lovely sandwiches...The 'thick' variety is ideal for toast. Be warned the 'extra thick' is just that...very, very thick... (I once accidentally got the extra thick by mistake... and the sandwiches were like 'door stops' and it was 'too thick' to go into the toaster!)

As the packaging is the same for all 3 thicknesses of bread - do look carefully for the sizes on the packet!

Hovis claims to have tested more than 400 recipes to create its "softest white loaf ever" and I believe these claims , as after sampling lots and lots of different breads - Hovis just has to be the 'softest'!!

The 'softeness' of the bread was demonstrated convincingly in one of the Hovis adverts whereby vegetables were placed on the bread - the bread dipped slightly under the weight of each vegetable to visually demonstrate the bread's softness. The adverts slogan is 'The softest thing since sliced bread'.

Hovis have a good 'track record' as good makers of bread. They are one of Britain's longest established bread brands. The company was founded in 1886 with the name of 'Smith's Patent rm Bread'. A national naming competition was won by a student who suggested the Latin phrase 'hominis vis' - strength of man - and then, shortened it to Hovis.

Hovis have pioneered a number of new products including 'Invisible Crust', 'Best of Both' and 'Seed Sensations'. Hovis Soft White is one of its most recent products.

A good review although I'm not a fan of supermarket bread. Much prefer homemade one.
