Advantages: good price (see review), tasty, good-size
Disadvantages: none.
I know we should really be eating wholemeal or wholegrain bread but our family loves good old English doughy white bread.
I used to but Warburtons all the time but I've noticed, like everything else, the price has crept up & I refuse to pay £1.30 or more for a single loaf I'm afraid.
I tried buying cheaper breads & supermarket brands but found these were usually dry, crumbly & didn't stay fresh for very long.
The best of the own brand loaves I found was Iceland's own which is worth a try?
I was pleased as heck when I saw Hovis on offer at Tesco.com - 3 large loaves for £2 - I didn't even know that Hovis made white bread!
I was impressed for the price & have since bought more & have put them in the freezer as bread is bulky to carry if you don't have a car.
It tastes good fresh or from frozen & doesn't lose it's nice taste or consistency when defrosted.
The packaging is similar to most breads - plastic wrapper with sticky tie so the loaf can be re-sealed.
It may be easy to pick up the wrong loaf though as the medium, thick & extra thick all look the same but they are marked in the centre.
Whatever happened to thinly sliced bread I wonder?
Hovis has been around since 1886 so I expected their white bread to be good &, as a family, we can all recommend it.
It's nice & soft & spongy, the slices are a good thickness & the taste is good. We've tried it with bacon, salad, toasted & grilled with cheese & Marmite etc- a very good all-rounder!
Hovis tell us there are no artificial preservatives or colourings & contains, 'the fonest quality flour from our mills..'
ingredients
~
as expected really - wheatflours, yeast, salt etc - but this bread isn't as salty as some I've tried which is good. If you like salt you can always add it to the filling/ toppers.
nutritional info
~
I won't bore you with the list as it's clearly marked on the pack.
The main ones of interest to me are -
- cals - only 94 per (good-sized) slice.
- carbs - 17.8 (bread IS usually high in carbs unless you buy Nimble etc)
- fat - 0.9g per slice - good if you're on a low-fat diet.
- but only 1g fibre - so not good if you use bread as a main source?
storage
~
- Hovis advises keeping in the fridge in hot/ humid weather (ugh - hate bread that's been in the fridge!)
- suitable for freezing.
- We've found that the bread stays fresh for a few days when stored in a lock & lock or breadbin - some cheaper ones go mouldy after 48 hours.
extra info on pack
~
- queries & comments - Hovis provide an email address & website welcoming our views.
- allergen information - contains wheat, gluten & soya.
summary
~
- great offer at Tesco at the moment which makes the price very attractive!
- good thickness of slices.
- doesn't dry up or crumble.
- soft.
- tasty.
- if you like white bread I'd recommend giving this Hovis soft white loaf a try.
Summary: worth a try if you're a lover of white bread
