Advantages: Pleasant Taste

Disadvantages: Paying more for the shape

Normally when buying a loaf, I opt for Tesco's excellent Tiger Bread - it tastes great, and is delicious and soft. However, whilst in the supermarket last week I was intrigued by the new 'Soft White Farmhouse' variety made by Hovis, and decided to give it a try. As bread manufacturers go, Hovis is probably Britain's best loved and most traditional, and has a history stretching back as far as 1886.

'So what is the difference between Hovis Soft White Farmhouse, and the standard Hovis Soft White?' you may ask - well, as far as I can tell, the only difference is the fact that the Farmhouse bread has a traditional domed shape, rather than the all-square variety that we typically see nowadays.

Price & Availability

Soft White Farmhouse has a regular price of £1.32 from Tesco, which is 18p more expensive than the non-farmhouse variety.

Ingredients
- - - - - - - -
The bread contains;
Wheat Flour, Water, Yeast, Salt, Vinegar, Soya Flour, Vegetable Fat, Fermented Wheat Flour, Emulsifier: E472e, and Flour Treatment Agent: Ascorbic Acid.

The ingredients shown above seem to be exactly the same as the ones found in the standard Soft White, and the bread uses no artifical preservatives or flavourings.

Flavour
- - - - -
Each slice of Soft White Farmhouse is fairly chunky, and nice and smooth in texture. Although it doesn't have a strong flavour, the taste is very pleasant, and is perfectly suited for toast use, where is is delicious with nothing more than some Lurpak butter.

Final Word

If you want a tasty bread, then you can't go far wrong with this stuff - however, whether you want to pay 18p more just for a rounded top is up to you - I suppose it depends on how much of a traditionalist you are. In terms of the bread itself, I can't fault it as it tastes great - so I suppose four dooyoo stars are ample reward for this pleasing loaf.

I realise that a bread review doesn't always make for the most interesting reading, so here's a poem that I wrote specially for the occasion.

Bread, Bread,
Throw it in the shed,
Wipe it on your head,
Feed it to the ducks,
Unless they are dead.
