Waitrose Iced Gems

Newest Review: ... careful. Some people like to eat them whole whereas others prefer to get the icing off and eat it separately to the biscuit. ... more

... The biscuit doesn't really taste of much but that doesn't matter the focus is on the icing. It's very sweet and is meant to taste of raspberry, blackcurrant and lemon, they do taste of these things faintly but the main taste is sweetness, they are definitely a teeth rotter. They have been around for ages, almost 100 years and used to be widely spread but now they can be very hard to get hold of, they normally cost about £1 for a bag of 6 packets in which you get about 15 little Iced Gems....more

Premium Review Waitrose Iced Gems: A Bag of Treasure (630 words)

I always remember Iced Gems from a young age. Yesterday I ate the first packet of them I had ever eaten in a long time. These biscuits were introduced by Peek Freans and until 1910 these biscuits did not have icing on top. From 1910 onwards they were iced and Jacobs named them Iced Gems. The icing is made from sugar and egg whites mixed together and as unpleasant as it sounds they do make a great taste, so sweet and damaging to teeth. My youngest memory of these was in primary school at the time there was a competition if you had a bag of the white gems you would win a prize. So they had taken all white Iced Gems out of packets leaving every other colour ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Mini treats (890 words)

My children love to share a packet of Iced gems, if I’m lucky or they may insist on a whole packet each which means the packet of 6 mini packets isn’t going to last long. I have also been know to allow my daughter to take them to school as I feel they are better than actual sweets which are a no-go for school lunches as far as I am concerned. Anyway after getting them delivered from tesco’s at a cost of 98p for a packet containing 6 individual 30g bags, I decided they could spare me one bag for me, all me and nobody but me. ***Packaging*** This particular packet came with some free stickers to collect which I found inside once opening ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Waitrose Iced Gems: True gems last forever (1100 words)

My future mother-in-law is a gem. Somehow she always manages to provide me exactly with what I am looking for. I tell her about my fear of flying, she comes up with Bach’s Rescue Remedy. I am looking for Mr. Right, she provides me with my fiancé. I am looking for a low-calorie snack to satisfy my sweet tooth with – she comes up with … Iced Gems! ***The product*** When I first spotted these little gems in her kitchen, I was not attracted to them very much. The primarily blue and white packaging frankly looks cheap with its Tesco shopping bag-like plastic. It is decorated like something that looks like it came out a 4-year-old’s colouring book – ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review They really are little gems (307 words)

Iced Gems were one of my favourite treats as a little kid, I used to spend ages eating each packet making them last as long as I could. I hadn't bought them for a few years but then when I came across them a few weeks ago I just had to buy them. For those of you who don't know what an Iced Gem is I shall explain, it is basically a circular biscuit about 1.5cm's in diameter, the biscuit is plain and the colour of rich tea biscuits but not the same taste. The icing on the top is made of sugar and egg so it's sort of like a hardened meringue really rather than icing. It is the best bit and comes in a variety of colours; pink, purple and yellow. The icing bit is a ...  Read the complete review

Iced gems started life in Reading at Huntley and Palmers factory .The company was Huntley and Palmers till 1970 when it joined Jacobs and Peak Freans to form associated biscuits in 1989 the company was acquired by Danone. The company now is called the Jacobs bakery. These little biscuits began life as a biscuit called gems. They were produced when Huntley and palmers were experimenting with biscuit technology in 1850. They use the ingredients wheat flour, sugar, vegetable oil, salt, milk protein, citric acid and flavourings. A small shrunken biscuit about 1.5cm in diameter was produced. They sold well. .
