Advantages: good for decorating foods
Disadvantages: sweet
Iced gems started life in Reading at Huntley and Palmers factory .The company was Huntley and Palmers till 1970 when it joined Jacobs and Peak Freans to form associated biscuits in 1989 the company was acquired by Danone. The company now is called the Jacobs bakery.
These little biscuits began life as a biscuit called gems. They were produced when Huntley and palmers were experimenting with biscuit technology in 1850.
They use the ingredients wheat flour, sugar, vegetable oil, salt, milk protein, citric acid and flavourings.
A small shrunken biscuit about 1.5cm in diameter was produced. They sold well.
.
The biscuit is a hard bland sweet tasting biscuit.
In 1910 Icing was put on one surface standing up in little pointy stars by a 10-point nozzle. They are not so pointy these days as a child I can remember cut tongues from the sharp icing.
The icing colours are whiter yellow red and purple chocolate ones introduced fairly recently. I remember the icing was just sweet no flavoured icing but now fruity flavours are added to the icing.
These biscuits are available in small 30g packs as multi packs of 6. These retail for about a pound. The packets are blue with a picture of a polar bear offering an iced gem.
These little packs are good size for a treat in your childs lunch pack. There are 116 cals per bag.
They are made in a factory using nuts.
Iced gems have been adorning all childrens party tables in my memories, adding a little bit of colour and a sweet taste.
Do you eat your iced gems by biting the icing of the top? Seeing if you can remove I from the base in one piece? I have watched many children do this.
I have used these little iced biscuits to decorate party food one or two added to the top of a trifle or sweet desert.
Can be used in cake decoration these little gems make flowers growing on my dads garden birthday cake. Eyes or hair on the face cakes I have made. Or just look pretty as a border around a round cake.
Thanks for reading this review about a biscuit that has been around for 150 years ( I find that staggering)
Have a good day summers here

- 21/06/05 I like the icing on these but not so keen on the biscuit, no idea that they had been around for 150 years.

- 20/06/05 Great review. I love iced gems and bite of all the biscuit bits leaving the yummy icing part for the ends of the treat!
