Advantages: Cheap but fantastic quality, Delicious, Low in Fat

Disadvantages: You may get addicted to them like myself

I usually like to cook my curry’s from scratch, adding spices and lots of authentic ingredients, but when I frankly cannot be bothered with the time consuming method I tuck into a nice ‘Good Choice Chicken Curry’ from Iceland.

We made a good choice too because it didn’t taste like the usual processed muck that are otherwise normally known as ready-meals, but it tasted so nice I made sure I brought a lot more next time I went shopping.

=#=#= SO WHAT DOES IT TASTE LIKE? =#=#=

I was extremely impressed with it, considering it was of course a ready made curry. With a slightly spicy fruit taste to it, it was not overpowering but it still had a bit of “kick” to it. I guess due to the ingredients curry powder, tomato, apple, onion, garlic puree and mango chutney which were all present.

It was a good consistency, not at all watery and the meal is made up of 12% chicken breast and 40% rice with the extra 48% belonging to the other ingredients. Although 12% doesn’t sound much in terms of meat, from the meat there was, it appeared to be of good quality. No gristly bits of muck and there were probably about 7 good sized pieces of meat which I found adequately in proportion with the rest of the meal. The amount of rice was also sufficient and even though the meal looks quite small, it was all I needed to eat to feel full up. The rice is perfectly cooked, white and fluffy like on the packaging, and it doesn’t taste starchy and stodgy.

The meal is made with no GM ingredients, artificial colours or flavours and only contains 2g of salt per meal, so this is very good as you would probably add more salt than that to a regular meal you make yourself and compared to other ready meals which have a much higher salt content.

Per microwaved meal there are only 439 calories which amounts to 7.2 of fat. This must be why the curry belongs to Iceland's Good Choice range, which describ

es how the meal is less than 2% fat. So there you go...delicious and you don’t have to feel guilty about eating it.

=#=#= LETS GET COOKING =#=#=

You can microwave or oven cook the meal. In the oven it takes 40 to 45 to cook on gas mark 6, but I have never cooked it in the oven so I will tell you about the microwaveable results.

You have to remove the outer packaging (obviously) and then pierce the film lid several times. At this point I am normally attacking the plastic tray with a fork like most people do when it tells you to pierce the lid. All you then need to do is place it on a microwaveable tray and put it in the microwave for 6 to 7 minutes.

Ping! Time up...

Once your 7 minutes is up you have to take the curry out of the microwave and peel back the film (don’t take it all the way off though as you have to recover again later.)

It is surprisingly easy to peel this film off too. It comes off instantly without any fuss, unlike some ready meals that have you cursing because by the time you have finally managed to prise the film off the meal has gone cold.

You then have to stir the rice and the curry slightly and then recover with the film lid and put back in the microwave for another 3 minutes.

Ping! All done...

You can then either eat the meal from the small black tray in which it came in or you can of course transfer it to a plate an pretend you cooked it yourself. The choice is yours, but make it a good choice and hide the packaging! Hehe!

=#=#= THE PACKAGING =#=#=

The curry comes in your average exciting cardboard box, but its all nicely decorated! It contains Iceland’s Good Choice logo complete with halo, the price of the meal in big font (99p) in the top right hand corner of the box, and a nice picture of the curry inside. Okay so the meat in the picture looks a little “chunkier”, but other than that it is a very go
od li
keness and not misleading. All of this appears on a light blue background.

The sides of the packaging include information such as cooking instructions, ingredients, nutritional information, Iceland’s promise and storage details. All of these you can read if you decide to buy the product, but I will include now a few of the more important details.

The product does contains nuts, gluten, milk, egg and garlic so of course not everyone can therefore eat it (sorry!). As Iceland say the meal has been specially developed to be lower in fat with controlled salt levels and still taste fantastic. So although it is a ready meal, it’s a pretty healthy one at that.

The curry itself comes in a black plastic tray, but the curry and rice are not separated in this. Not a problem though as they don’t really mix when the curry is cooking and the food can be eaten straight from it, saving on the washing up as well! Overall I give this curry a 9 out of 10!

=#=#= PRICE AND LOCATION =#=#=

The Chicken Curry only costs 99p, so although this is pretty cheap for a 400g meal, it doesn’t taste at all cheap and of course you can only buy this specific curry from Iceland. You can check out my review of the store if you like as well (hint! hint!) otherwise you can pop into your local Iceland store or check out www.iceland.co.uk.

Low fat and microwavable? Well, it's got my vote! I find, that if these things aren't spicy enough, some dried chilli flakes on top often helps.
