Advantages: Low fat, crunchy biscuit & icing, popular, individually wrapped small bags
Disadvantages: Can be a bit bland
I remember these from kids parties years ago, though we never had them in the cupboard. I bought a pack last week because they were on offer & took a little trip down memory lane. I can't say I'm a huge fan, or find them to be anything extra special, they're a tasty little snack.
Iced Gems are produced by Jacob's, a company dating back to 1885 with years of snack-related knowledge and experience. Iced Gems seem to be a very popular choice for kids parties, or at least they used to be, though I'm not sure if things have changed since I last went to one!
These are sold in multipacks of 6 x 25g bags, and are usually found amongst the snacks & biscuits. They're generally advertised and packaged to appeal to children, though I'm sure there are many adult fans of these out there too.
Each 25g plastic packet contains 98 calories and only 0.8g of fat, so they're a reasonably light and healthy snack. Although the packets are quite small, they're just right for 'grazing' on without being too filling.
Being individually packed into small bags, these are good for taking out with you, putting in lunchboxes etc.
As they're quite popular they're easy to come across in supermarkets, and as they don't have anything too diverse about their taste or texture they're a good all-rounder for parties and sharing if you want something most people can eat.
Iced Gems are simple in their design, and yet unique. They are small rounded biscuits, topped with fruit flavoured icing. The flavours include: Orange, blackcurrant, iced, lemon and raspberry.
The biscuit base is crunchy and the icing on top is also quite crisp and crunchy, so they have a satisfying crunch appeal.
I don't find the icing to be too flavoursome, in fact, most taste relatively plain. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, as I quite like them being biscuity with more of a hint of fruity flavour rather than being anything too powerful or offputting.
Overall, these may be small and wont go far to satisfy your appetite, but they're a tasty little biscuity snack.
Summary: Who doesn't remember these little gems?
